House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

Excellent point EV. How anyone defends MS is beyond me. How anyone could think MS had Terri's best interests at heart just blows me away. How could he, when he is shacking up with another woman and having kids?
Remember what Delay said, "The Terri issue is legally complicated, but not morally complicated".
That is what most of the WPPFF crowd likes to do, argue legalities.
EV, I know how a lot of folks feel about what Governor Bush did and didn't do, but I think we should all be able to agree that he was not guilty of political opportunism. I'll bet you noticed that a lot of politicians worked very hard to steer clear of this entire incident. This Schiavo case was just about as sad and painful as a case can be and it just wasn't designed to have any kind of happy ending. It was like a bag of poison for any politician who couldn't or didn't avoid it.
I can't think of anyone who benefited politically from this case. And, I can't imagine anyone ever having thought they could. ;-)
This case will likely produce some activity in Congress but whether it goes beyond yammering is doubtful once the hysteria dies down. (@790)
I don't disagree with the second statement. Time will tell how Congress prioritizes this. But the first one is inaccurate.
Those who 'steered clear' are guilty of a serious sin of omission.

Please know that I have no problem with you voicing your opinion. But also know that most Freepers agree with EV. You can call us all the names you want but in the end most of us are pro-life, from conception to natural birth. That is just the way FR is and is spelled out quite nicely in the mission statement. The point is, you, by making quality of life decisions for other people, and judging who and who is not worthy of living according to your standards, are taking on yourself the perogatives of God.
A dangerous slippery slope for any man or for any society.

Well, that makes sense now. I did not know you were referring to something I had posted to someone else.
I was hoping you would reply to the fact that the big dogs are no more? No response?
Anyway, reading FR's mission statement is a wonderful thing. I think if I was a trouble-maker I would have been suspended or banned at some point and that has not happened.
Is Article One, Section Two of the Florida Constitution a 'legality'?

I have noticed you always resort to name calling, why is that? Not just with me, but on many of your posts.
My question about where the usual suspects are was rhetorical. Most on FR don't really care. As I said, that ship has sailed.

Excellent point. It really does boil down to the fact that they don't like Christians, or I should say, Christians that actually have morals and try to live by The Bible.
It is too bad that we see that attitude here at FR. But apparently there is a small group who does feel that way. Good thing it is just a small group. I find most think the way you and I do here at FR.
