House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

Love the new tagline. Freepmail
you seem to be living proof there is more than one way to be brain dead...
No, because food and water is not 'life support' in the sense you obviously mean it. Of course, you know that.
I see Jr. High has let out for the day.
Do your homework.
How about this? Terri Schiavo was a citizen of the state of Florida, and as such was entitled to have her rights defended by, yes, the President, if not the Governor of her state of residence:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Article IV.
Section. 2.
Clause 1: The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States.
[and to cite further:]
Article II.
Section 1.
Clause 8: Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
I saw you posted the thread and jumped to the end but am not getting caught up on the earlier posts.
I see that you were attacked just for posting a mainstream news article. My, my, how the rules seem to have changed.
It used to be that this is exactly what we did. Post articles and then comment on them. How unfortunate that some freepers don't seem to understand that. Pity really.
not=now
it's very doubtful she ever said it, BUT
we'd better all be careful about EVER saying anything that starts with "I wouldn't want... '
for ex: what if we said 'I wouldn't want to live in a wheelchair....blind....bald...etc"
Such statements could prove fatal - precedence has been set;o)
By your definition, your lunch was 'life support'.
How would you like it if your government locked you in a room and didn't let you have anything to eat or drink for two weeks? How would you like it if our legal and political leaders determined that for some reason your 'quality of life' was such that you had no further constitutional rights?
Y'all just haven't thought this thing through.
doctor's have said the opposite - that 9 out of 10 who previously had a living will - when actually in that situation - change their minds.
Life is precious -even when not perfect
Doesn't matter, since none of it would have happened if they had done the right thing.
George and Jeb came to the biggest test of their careers, and they failed it.
I'll wait while you provide a link. That is contrary to everything I've heard and read.
Peach, your #501 works for me. :)
D-I-T-T-O.
if the Senate has too much to do that it can't get rid of renegade judges, then the judiciary is not accountable to anyone, de facto.
WOW!
Cool Tom! Glad to see you're coming back from the cliff a bit!!
Speak for yourself
You are the one who hasn't thought this thing thru.
Imagine YOU are in a PVS for 15 YEARS, sustained only by a feeding tube with no chance of ever recovering. (Spare me the answers to the "no chance", I've heard the arguments about that)..
I honestly wouldn't have a problem with being starved to death. I'd hope that someone would give me an overdose of morphine to help the process along, but that's my call. I'm sure they would make me comfortable and I'd fall into a deep sleep and wake up in the arms of our Lord.
Besides that, if I were in a PVS, I wouldn't know what was happening anyway. Would you?
That said, I am sorry Terri's death has caused so many people so much grief. That's the truth.
