DeLay Apologizes for Schiavo Case Rhetoric
AP via Yahoo ^ | April 13, 2005 | Terence Hunt

Posted on 04/13/2005 8:21:32 PM PDT by cyncooper

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.

"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.

At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.

"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.

Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.

Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

I think those of us who did not want to starve Terri to death can still be sure that Delay is on our side.

I see. Because I want the national government to stay within its limitations as accorded by the Constitution, which is confirmed by its author, I 'wanted' Terri to die. Thanks for your non-thought

Sorry, you apparently were so quick with the whiny crying routine that I didn't even have a chance to ask.

Lies? To use your approach, "too easy" - "Terri never had a trial."

Is that your name? Hmmm... How would anyone know that? One would think you've posted it here yourself before...

And, could you or the mods point that out in the rules? Strange, it seems to happen here all the time? I'm sure I've called mhking by his name many times, and I see folks doing it all the time. Same with many others. Maybe it only applies to those who are ashamed of who they are?

Its what I read in several news articles linked to this forum.

At any rate, this was clearly a troublesome case and based on the films of her on TV, Greer should have at least taken a look at her himself. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't I? Wouldn't ANYBODY?

What about the autopsy?? How many dead bodies get a Sheriff's escourt from a hospice to the local coroner??

And how about the request of the Schiavo family that an independent pathologist be present at the autopsy and the refusal of the coroner to permit this. And the original scheme to immediately incinerate the body.

Doesn't all of this sound fishy to you?? Check out the link on the main page and follow the articles which appeared here in this forum and you might change your mind about this.

It isn't to be an 'activist' to go back to fundamental law, such as is found in the Fifth Amendment and in Article One, Section Two of the FL Constitution, and to rule accordingly.

No judge has discretion to violate the fundamental right to life of our citizens.

This particular GOP CYA talking point is a dog that just ain't gonna hunt...at least with those who reference fundamental human rights as their political and legal compass. God help those who are naive enough to be taken in by this argument, and may God restrain those who know better but use it anyway in the name of partisanship.

You are as rabidly anti-GOP as the most mouth-breathing Deaniac at Democratic Underground, and I give your rants about as much attention as I do theirs.

That is, good for a laugh, but not much else.

The details of how that came to be are not at issue here though they sound rather typical of those going into Medicaid. But there is no doubt that the settlement would not have covered anything like fifteen years. While I have not seen a figure as to the cost of the hospice O'Reilly claimed it was 80 something thousand a day I assumed he was wrong and it was per month which is about a million a year.

MS resources were diverted to paying lawyers after the Schindlers began their assault on him through the courts there is nothing exceptionable about that. Nor can I count on your figures being accurate wrt his home or car being accurate.

I paid no attention to this story in the RATmedia thus have reached NO conclusions based on its reporting. All I have to do is read the hysterical posts here of the Schindler supporters to know where the truth lies. Once the screeches of "nazi", "death cultist" etc. start flying I knew immediately which side was right. Didn't take a whole lot of brainpower either.

No it is about the diversion of scare resources into lost causes rather than expending them where they can save lives. The millions spent on TS could have done immense good to those capable of being saved.

I've been an active Republican for many years, until this case. Probably more active than most here.

I am now an Independent.

Unlike some, I refuse to stand silently by in the name of partisanship while my government subverts the Constitution and starts offing citizens who have never been convicted of a capital crime.

Feel free to ignore me. Folks like you have proven to be very good at ignoring things...

Oh, my...just when I thought I'd heard it all.

What, perhaps a donation to the RNC?

Resources getting a little scarce up there, man?

Since the Republican senatorial candidate who I worked for last year WON, and introduced the Senate version of the bill to save Terri Schiavo...
and the Republican senatorial candidate you worked for LOST and didn't introduce anything except...let me think...could it be he introduced nothing?

Might I suggest that the last thing any politician needs is your activity?

Amen. I am now Constitution Party. I still love our President, still hope for the best for the Republican Party, but I am no longer a member, nor will I be in the future unless (a) the Republicans stop backing down to the Democrats in Congress (and elsewhere); (b) Delay withdraws his aplogy about the judges; (c) Jeb and/or the President admit they were wrong to allow an innocent citizen of their country be murdered in front of their eyes while they stood back and watched.

I suspect the donations to the RNC are scare from the Shiavo supporters. Last I read on FR, donations to Jesse Jacksons Rainbow Push were being solicited.

Revolting, isn't it?
