Damn right they were. But again, it didn't stop them from craving assimilation into American society. ....and because of that they were eventually accepted.

Also, when watching Spanish television I see 1/2 hour infomercials pushing courses to learn English.

You should've checked out the U.S. vs. Mexico soccer game at the L.A. Coliseum in '98, where the vast majority of the 80,000+ in attendance were rooting for the "visiting" team. The American national anthem was booed mercilessly, and "urine bombs" rained down on both the U.S. players and those in the stands who were brave enough to actively root for the home team.

Needless to say, demographic annexation was (and is) more to their liking that (American) cultural assimilation.

Oh gee, it could have much better, such as following the British hooligan model where people actually die attending soccer matches.
