The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the Presidents guest worker amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.
The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The managements answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.
Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.
Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bushs immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the Presidents Oath of Office.
ditto bump
apparently.
Who ever said "free speech" was the right of any "member" of FR?
This site belongs to Jim. Period. There isn't much free speech in my living room either for anyone that wants to come in and argue crap with me. I'll ask them to leave.
I'll bet good money you couldn't go to any of these other sites listed in this screed and "freely speak" by writing anything you wish. You all know you'd get "banned" or worse by them.
Idiots like the writer of "The Shot..." remind me of the left when it comes to "free speech". It's okay for a nutjob like Ward Churchill but Harvard President Summers better not "think outside the box" at a private, off record session of people together to think in unorthodox terms. What a bunch of hypocrites!
Sorry about the mis-spelling of your name. If you have been banned numerous times then I was plain wrong about you being one of the "untouchables".
Help! Help! I'm being repressed! See the violence inherent in the system! </ python>
Umm...I'm sorry you doubt it. But I guess I doubt whatever you have to say too, if you are going to imply that I am a liar.
If I recounted here, the emails I received, then Jim would have to ban me or at least delete my post. It was raw racism, from people who quoted and referred me to that site. As time went by the discussion deteriorated into attacks on Catholicism. My candidate was a conservative Republican running for governor of a large state.
FR is banning members for their opinions. Please forward this info and help us warn other Freepers!
Along with their website link, of course. My first thought was "To do what? Take over the FreeRepublic?" I didn't bother replying. I believe they think they will steal away enough Freepers to become significant. Ha!
O heavens no, I would not lend myself to such a generality.
On the specific point of that post, I thought I might be speaking for her, and I pinged her so she could affirm or correct.
My position on the Civil War threads is that I am a student of WWII history, and on the CW, I have much reading to do. Too much, I daresay, to do anything but watch from the back row.
Its typical liberalism. When one complains about liberal hate mongering and name calling, they are labeled as anti-free speech by liberals. You have to understand that ANY criticism of liberalism, to them, is ALWAYS unjustified. Likewise, to them all conservatives are the same, David Duke-ish character, so when a conservative complains about one person who's truly lost it, he, by definition, isn't being consistent.
Remember, it isn't the substance, but the charge. If he can parlay this into air time, he's accomplished his goal. And anyone pointing out that it isn't true is a fascist.
Do you have the thread by any chance?
Last night I read a post asking if anyone could remember a Democrat entertainer who was any damn good. I couldn't think of any. This morning on Turner Classic Movies, I got a refresher on my official answer: George M. Cohan.
Your welcome.
<Freedom and Economic Opportunity pretty much go hand in hand. Can you name me a Country with economic opportunity that is not free?>
True. So you admit they are not here for the freedom but rather the economic advantage. If the opposite were true they would be willing to fight for it in their home country. It would be far more honorable for them to fight for and win freedom in their own country raising the lives of their fellow countrymen rather than abandoning them by leaving for the U.S.
No, I meant the opposite; your point about them fighting for their own freedoms in their own countries is well taken, though. A large number of Cubans here tried to enlist our aid in doing exactly that, and Kennedy cut them off at the knees. One could see where they, and more recently the Shia and Kurds in Iraq may have some questions about that in their minds, too. The difference here is President Bush is not Kennedy, Clinton, or even Bush '41. Hence my willingness to see what he comes up with before I decide.
Sorry, you misunderstood; I was referring to the ... I suppose they were a Movement in pre-WWII America. Run a google on the "America Firsters" and you'll see what I meant.
I looked it up and don't see what you were referring to. Perhaps you could post a more clear explanation?
Nuts ... I just tried to spawn a new window to check and IE won't co-operate. Perhaps it's "America First Party" or "America First Movement" I'll check later and Feepmail you on it. Sorry.
and this...
First, you are most likely revealing for FR that you are that well-known and manic Democratic Party chair...and, if you are the following, you aren't not welcome on FR (unless you admit it)...
Awful lot of danged vanities posted today! ;-)
No and I already stated that on this thread.
practicality from an atheist.....implausible...lol
People who post racist comments are not necessarily racists. Most on FR who repeat racist statements simply don't appreciate that what they are saying is racist.
It has been repeated so many times that Hispanic immigrants are "diluting our culture", "abusing our welfare system", "destroying our neighborhoods", "having lots of babies", "drug dealers", "criminals", "lowering our education standards", "drive without insurance", "don't assimilate fast enough", etc...that some people simply don't realize how racist those statements are.
Try substituting the word "Blacks" for "Hispanics" and it becomes obvious how racist the statements are. I doubt that very many of the anti-immigrant crowd would post statements saying Blacks are lowering our education standards, having lots of babies, drug dealers, destroying our neighborhoods, etc...
They probably aren't racists, they just haven't stopped to think about what they are saying.
"practicality from an atheist.....implausible...lol"
Doncha know...all atheists are practical...now, where did I put that buggy whip...I'm going to need it to get those horses to pull that sleigh to Cub Foods.
My wife tries to get me to use the car, but the sleigh works so well....where was I....
