Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

"What amazes me is how some people are totally ignorant about previous immigration waves. One-third the immigrants from Europe returned home in a short time --- there were no social services, no government handouts, no WIC, no food stamps for the losers. Even though that trip was very long and difficult --- back then those who couldn't make it here had no safety net and went home."

You're right -- far too many people take for granted the terrifying ordeal experience on the way to Ellis Island, and then the procedure itself.

These folks got in line like cattle, with NO guarantees, and NO welfare whatsoever -- accepting that the mere opportunity of plying their respective trade and calling America their new home -- and proudly doing so was well worth their blood, sweat and tears.

And again -- these people WANTED to be "Americans."

. . . while the Minutemen Project loons are not advocating self-defense.

What exactly, in your deluded mind, do you believe that the Minuteman Project "loons" are going to be doing?

If you wish do dig up old posts:

Do you still this this post of Arleigh's in response to Melas's concerns about his tone (click here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/736395/replies?c=114 ) is a great post (see here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/736395/posts?page=126#126 )? Do you still think that his theory is what "they" want? If so, who exactly is this "they" you mentioned?

To answer your question: I never asked if he provided any form of asisstance to them other than proselytizing (that was what he was doing). I honestly would not know if he did or not then. He's not on that mission any more. He has his life, I have mine.

""No illegal immigration"?? Of course not -- U.S. immigration authorities enforced it's laws and procedure back then."

There was no immigration laws back then, if you got here, and you weren't visibly ill, you got in.

Wow, that's an oldie, but I still remember how the words, "My beliefs are based on white nationalism, not racism" rocked me that night. As if we were all so stupid that we didn't know what white nationalism was.

Well.....the political net right now seems enamoured with this thread. It's #1 on Yahoo. Even the Dummies are enjoying this...sadly.

There are a lot of very old posts floating about out there.

Some are shocking.....at least to me.

I see, and thanks for the correction. As you said, defending your home or business is not vigilantism, but self-defense. Rushing out a thousand miles to the border with a rifle is not self-defense but ideologue-addled lunacy.

There you go again...

You are completely mischaracterizing what the Minuteman Project plans to do. They are not bringing their rifles, they're not hunting Mexicans, etc. You join your shrill leftist Reconquista brethren when you hurl false accusations like that.

The truth is that the project is much like a border FReep. Go to where the point can be made best and bring all the people you can. Did you bash Jeff Head and other FReepers when they went to Klamath Falls Basin and made their point there? I suppose those FReepers who travelled a great distance to Washington, DC to tell Gore to "Get out of Cheney's house!" were displaying "idealogue-addled lunacy". And those noisy few who actually did rush out with their rifles to stop the government from seizing the weapons in the town square (see Lexington circa. 1775) were also displaying "idealogue-addled lunacy".

"There was no immigration laws back then, if you got here, and you weren't visibly ill, you got in."

The "law" was procedural. And "health" was hardly the only reason for denial of citizenship IF you read any part of what I posted.

If it were an amnesty, every illegal alien would be granted permission to stay simply be virtue of being here. "Being here" doesn't gain anyone any advantage.

Yes, that would be one form of amnesty. Another is to allow the lawbreaker already here to go unpunished for his crimes and to allow him to apply for a Visa, etc without having to return to his home country or submit to the usual clearing process through the embassy there. And that would be the form of amnesty being promoted by the President.

A person motivated by racial prejudices (and you are not) doesn't acquit himself just because he finds another justification to hide his prejudices behind.

And there you go pretending that the real motive behind those concerned about border security and illegal immigration is racism. There's a closet racist under every bed, right?

Blah, blah, blah, when in trouble, page 1 from the Gheen playbook(plagarized from the DNC playbook, btw) call your opponent a liar.

But the point here is that you, Luis, and Jihad are all liars. You lied and said Marine Inspector supports Hillary Clinton. Luis lies and says that the Minuteman Project is a bunch of redneck racists carrying their sniper rifles down to the border to hunt Mexicans. And Jihad lies about those who speak out about the lack of border security and the problems of illegal immigration are somehow racist.

Here I was referring to the "guest worker" plan that promises that Americans will be asked first before the ILLEGAL immigrant-cum-guest worker can be legally hired under the plan.

Yeah, the American will be asked if he will accept a slaves wages sans benefits to fill a certain job. Of course no American will take it and it will be filled with an "illegal immigrant-cum-guest worker".

I see the workers exodus [and their money sent home] as a safety valve, but essentially, we agree. -- Mexico is ripe for revolution, and our government is playing games at our border in an attempt to delay the inevitable.

If Mexico ever has a revolution or a disaster like a major earthquake the illegal immigration we're experiencing now will be considered a trickle. That's why it has to be made clear to them they're not the 51st state and they have to learn to solve their own problems like everyone else.

And people forget that there was land to be homesteaded. Many immigrants came in because the government had a lot of land it wanted settled --- there was so much land -- even the Spanish government passed land grants out to all kinds of people. The land is now all settled, and massive immigration means our huge cities become all the huger --- cities the size of Mexico City --- sprawling slums. Small towns will become big towns and rural life is shut down. The past needs for immigration are gone --- we're no longer trying to be an industrial strength nation --- we've shipped out the jobs that sometimes required immigrant labor.

Anyhow the past is the past --- not much in the past justifies what we do today. Things have changed --- heck --- if we looked at the past for examples --- we could justify going back to slavery --- why pay our dirt cheap labor at all? Why not just buy them from Vicente Fox --- get some new/old kind of commerce going --- breed them, sell them --- that was a form of immigration done in the past --- and for that good old cheap labor reason.

Of course marine inspector says he's not a racist.

Ronald Reagan, their supposed hero would be sickened by the rhetoric spewed by marine inspector and his cohorts. It's the same type of rhetoric of lewis farrakhan and the nation of islam, IMO.

Ah, okay, I've seen ALIPAC's because of a link or two he had put up in the past but have never heard of Tabor's 'til now (that's not Liberty Post is it?).

When I want news and conservative discussion I come to FR.

Salient points...

Folks making analogous immigration issues in the year 1905 as compared to 2005 are either delusional, OR have an agenda or "movement" to drive.
