"Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Holy Scriptures or by evident reason ... I consider myself convicted by the testimony of Holy Scripture, which is my basis; my conscience is captive to the Word of God. Thus I cannot and will not recant, because acting against one's conscience is neither safe nor sound. God help me. Amen." (Martin Luther)

If you're going to quote Luther, it would be nice if you didn't distort him to try to support your views. Luther never proposed to do away with all Christan tradition, only Papal abuse.

Sermon for Christmas Eve; Titus 2:11-15

Martin Luther's Sermons, organized by, (gasp), the Church Year. That means all his Christman sermons are close to the top of the page.

And this is what the Lutheran church believes, which is the orthodox faith:

Article XV: Of Ecclesiastical Usages.

1] Of Usages in the Church they teach that those ought to be observed which may be observed without sin, and which are profitable unto tranquillity and good order in the Church, as particular holy days, festivals, and the like.

2] Nevertheless, concerning such things men are admonished that consciences are not to be burdened, as though such observance was necessary to salvation.

3] They are admonished also that human traditions instituted to propitiate God, to merit grace, and to make satisfaction for sins, are opposed to the Gospel and the doctrine of faith. Wherefore vows and traditions concerning meats and 4] days, etc., instituted to merit grace and to make satisfaction for sins, are useless and contrary to the Gospel.

It was not my intention to suggest that Luther supported my views on this subject. My intention was to demonstrate that my views are held captive to the Word of God alone, and not human traditions when they are opposed to that Word.

Luther have us an excellent start on the road to real Reformation. Later Reformers were able to "kick it up a notch."
