Do you understand how things work? I don't think so. Nothing in this world is black and white. ESPECIALLY when it comes to politics. What would you have him do? Secure our borders, and get Congress to back him up? Then what happens? The Democrats, who don't give a shit about our national security, will scream bloody murder about the republicans being racists. Then the sheeple vote out the Republicans in the next election, they the Democrats remove the security around the borders as a sign of "We've kicked the racists out". We end up being less secure AND the democrats have control of everything. If you can't see that as the logical outcome then you are horribly ignorant/stupid with respect to the present situation we live in. The ONLY thing that will ensure the Democrats don't wrestle control over everything and turn this country in to a socialists/communists wonderland, is for some kind of terrorist attack to occur, and have it be shown that these terrorists make their way to the US threw Mexico. That is the only way we can secure our borders and NOT make it a "Republicans are racists" political issue.

So when there is a terrorist attack in the US and the terrorists made it in thru Mexico, thank the bottom feeding Democrats who put politics above the welfare of our country YET again.

Your concerns are real and, yes this is a possible outcome of any attempt by the GOP to enforce the borders. I think this is the calculation that has been made by Rove and Company. However, I think it is mistaken. I think the country would have rallied to the idea and, furthermore, I think they would still rally to the idea. However, this is a prudential question and a serious one. Our duty on FreeRepublic however is to try to speak the truth because most of us on this site are not politicians and can therefore speak the truth

The truth is, the border is a security threat. And if the next attack, if it comes, is traced to an illegal border crossing, there will be you know what to pay for all politicians of any stripe who have supported what can loosely be called "open borders." When the voter backlash occurs, you will see a realignment of political opinion that will be stunning and we will see results.

My only point here is to cry in the wilderness and hope that somebody will do something before more people get killed.

You act as if the reason we aren't securing our borders is fear of a political backlash. I disagree. Many republicans have no problem with the border situation and some would even support loosening border patrol in the interest of business. In addition, the Democrats will always cry "racist" no matter what republicans do. It's how they keep some of their minority vote.

Most Americans are in favor of tightening the borders and stoppping the flow of illegals. Even in California, Proposition 187 denying services to illegals passed (187) with a strong majority, although the judiciary has since repealed most of it.

I think American voters in general would respond well to a politician taking a harder stance on border control and illegal immigration.

your premise might be true if people weren't fearful for their safety. It is a question of what they fear MOST, being called "racist" or being physically attacked.
Most people will opt for safety.
