You're right. I don't know all the whys and wherefores, but that's the limit. It's because modern computers compute in binary, not decimal. And the posting number is contained in 16 bits (a common size).
65535 in binary is 1111111111111111. Trying to count higher is like trying to reach 10,000 (decimal) with only 4 digits. You just aren't going to get any higher than 9999.
