A software update for the Windows operating system has left hundreds and thousands of computer users unable to access the internet. The update, known as a "patch", conflicts with another piece of software, the Zone Alarms firewall, that many people use to protect their computers from hackers and viruses. The patch, codenamed MS08-037, was designed to fix a security loophole in the way Windows handles website addresses. It was discovered that there was a weakness with the operating system that could allow hackers to re-route legitimate web pages to malicious websites instead, and leave internet users open to fraud...

Is your firewall spying on you? Zone Alarm gets rumbled By Paul Hales, in Jerusalem: Sunday 22 January 2006, 12:39 IT’S OBVIOUS, REALLY, that the best way of penetrating users' PCs to see what they get up to online would be to become a Firewall maker. Like, when I wanted a Firewall and was too tight to pay for one, I turned to Checkpoint’s little freebie Zone Alarm. It sits there between you and the Internet and lets you know when someone’s trying to sneak in through your backdoor or when a program you’re running tries to connect to the...

A critical software bug has been discovered in several of the most widely used anti-virus programs. It could be exploited to take control of a computer or to steal information, according to an analysis produced by the independent security analyst who made the discovery. The glitch affects 39 different Symantec products - including both home and enterprise versions of its anti-virus software. It resides within the Symantec anti-virus library, which is used by all of the packages. The analyst, Alex Wheeler, discovered that a critical error occurs when the Symantec anti-virus library decompresses files from "RAR" format for analysis Symantec...
  • Need help! Zone Alarm preventing weather radar motion(an I'm a tech idiot, what should I do vanity)

OK, so I upgraded my Zone Alarm(paid version, I'm no freebie mooch), and ever since then I am unable to put the weather radars in motion(NWS, tv station radars, etc.) If I turn off Zone Alarm, they work just fine, but once I turn it back on, any refresh of the radar loop page kills it again. Been experimenting with all the various controls in ZA, but haven't yet found the problem. Anyone know exactly what it is that ZA is blocking/stopping to prevent the loops, and more importantly what controls on ZA I can change to fix the problem?...

I notice that Zone Alarm sometimes takes forever starting on my computer (running Windows 2000 Pro) and causes long delays (up to 45 seconds) when I shut down. Disabling ZA makes the problems go away. This doesn't always happen and usually only slows things down, but every so often it hangs up solidly, either coming on or going off. This has happened on two different computers running W2K. On one of these computers, Zone Alarm worked fine under NT4 (and yes, when I changed over to W2K I downloaded the W2K version of ZA). The only advice I've seen so...
