Two men robbed a Yonkers bank in a stolen sport utility vehicle yesterday and traded shots with the police as they tried to elude pursuing officers, the authorities said. One of the men was shot and killed by officers in the Bronx, the police said. The men robbed the First Union Bank on Tuckahoe Road and Central Avenue in Yonkers, the police said. <p>A food preservative was to blame for the sudden outbreak of illness that triggered a chemical-contamination scare in downtown Yonkers, a health official said.</p> <p>"The food that the family digested was heavily contaminated with sodium nitrite," said Mary Landrigan, spokeswoman for the Westchester County Department of Health. <p>YONKERS — Six people were hospitalized, two of them in critical condition, by what officials first believed was a case of toxic poisoning but later turned out to be contaminated food, Police Commissioner Charles Cola said late last night.</p> <p>The early reports of toxic poisoning prompted a large-scale response by city, county and federal officials who shut down the area surrounding 223 Nepperhan Ave., where the incident occurred. The emergency room at St. Joseph's Medical Center was also blocked off for 2 1/2 hours after the victims were transported there.</p>
