Jeanine Pirro may not be ready to say which office she's seeking next, but former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer is — he's running for U.S. Senate. Spencer, who was forced from office by term limits in 2003, said yesterday that he would seek the Republican and Conservative nominations to run against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. He described himself as the ideal conservative alternative to the incumbent Democrat. "I obviously see what's going on in politics, and I think I am uniquely qualified to debate with (Clinton) on the issues," Spencer, 58, said. Spencer said his experience as mayor gives him...

WHITE PLAINS, Dec. 9 - A state judge reviewing hundreds of contested ballots in a Westchester County Senate race heard testimony Thursday alleging improper voting by poll workers and questionable handling of ballots in Yonkers. The proceeding at the county's Board of Elections here centered on a pile of 760 contested ballots in the still-undecided 35th District Senate race between the Republican incumbent, Nicholas A. Spano, the third-most powerful member of the Senate, and his challenger, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, a Democrat. Mr. Spano was leading by only 114 votes when the hearing began Thursday. By nightfall, the state Supreme Court justice,...

THE GOP's desperate search for a challenger to Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is close to coming to an end. Republican sources told The Post yesterday that Gov. Pataki, at a private meeting last week, offered Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, an anti-abortion conservative with a controversial personal life, the chance to run against Schumer next year. The politically ambitious Spencer, who must leave office at the end of the year because of term limits, told Pataki that he was "interested" and would "think about" the offer, the sources said. Spencer plans to consult top Republican strategists in New York and...

Yonkers Mayor John Spencer said Monday that Gov. George Pataki has spoken with him about the possibility of Spencer running for the U.S. Senate next year against Democratic incumbent Charles Schumer. Spencer said, however, that it was not "a serious discussion" and it is too soon for him to decide. The Republican mayor, who is leaving office at the end of this year because of a term-limits law, said, "The governor did speak to me about it. He did mention it to me." He said the occasion -- Pataki's endorsement last week of Deputy Mayor Phil Amicone to succeed Spencer...

My Name is Phil Amicone and I Am Running for Mayor! Seven years ago the people of Yonkers made a conscious choice - to release our city from the stranglehold of incompetent politics and replace it with professional leadership. They did that by electing John Spencer mayor. Mayor Spencer then asked me to join his effort to rebuild the city we had both grown up in and raised our families in. That decision was easy to make, and accepting the position of Deputy Mayor was the best decision of my professional career, until tonight. I came to the job...

Most of the predominantly Hispanic customers at the Central Bar on New Main Street in Yonkers say they enjoy watching Univision on television because it reminds them of home. "We like Univision because the clientele is 80 percent Mexican, and they broadcast Mexican programs," said Lucero Cifuentes, 29, a bartender who on Tuesday was enjoying a media buffet on two televisions, each tuned to different channels. Here, Univision's programming sparks conversations — not controversy. But in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, Univision is at the heart of a heated debate over whether the media giant should be allowed to acquire the...

Two men robbed a Yonkers bank in a stolen sport utility vehicle yesterday and traded shots with the police as they tried to elude pursuing officers, the authorities said. One of the men was shot and killed by officers in the Bronx, the police said. The men robbed the First Union Bank on Tuckahoe Road and Central Avenue in Yonkers, the police said. It was unclear how much money was taken. Yonkers police, alerted by a silent alarm triggered by a bank employee, began chasing the men shortly after the robbery, and the men opened fire on them. The police...
