Metro Radio LLC is pulling the plug on Conservative Talk on 730 WTNT Alexandria VA/Washington DC, 97.7 W249BE Alexandria and 102.9 W275BO Chantilly, VA. Metro has registered SomosLaCapital.com for the stations and has already updated its webstreams to use the new moniker. The new website describes the new format as “La Capital features a Spanish Hits Music format targeting Hispanics 24-50 years old, local talk shows, music shows, and many other issue shows that address the culture in Washington, DC.” WTNT currently programs a mix of brokered and syndicated Conservative Talk shows such as Coast To Coast AM, Laura Ingaraham,...

11/29 - UPDATED. DCRTV hears that DC-based political talker Laura Ingraham (right) could soon return to the airwaves via a brokered deal with DC area talker WTNT, 730 AM/102.9 FM. Ingraham, who had been heard until early this week on WTNT, recently announced that she's leaving her syndicator, TRN. But, we're told, she does not yet have another national radio distribution deal set up. Sources tell us that she's been talking to Clear Channel's Premiere and Cumulus. That leaves her with the short-term possibility of buying time from WTNT and doing her show from its Fairfax studios, allowing her to...

Good show on Tuesday 22 November. Andy was planning to be at the Republican debate that night, so he'll have some commentary and/or blog entries today. The best part of the program was Andy interviewing his "guest", Fred Grandy. For those who might not know, Fred and Andy were canned from WMAL for daring to raise the topic of CAIR and criticizing radical Muslims. Andy then found a home on competitor WTNT and does the 3-6 drive home slot. In this "interview" it almost sounded like the old WMAL program - very entertaining! You can download the podcast of yesterday's...
  • WTNT to Launch 102.9 Relay (in a few wks)

DCRTV hears that DC area talker WTNT, 730 AM, will soon get an FM relay on 102.9. Bruce Houston, head of Vienna-based Metro Radio, tells us that he's got a contract to purchase the low-power license from Lynchburg's Liberty University. When launched in a few weeks from a tower off West Ox Road in Fairfax, the new FM signal should cover much of Fairfax County day and night, Houston says. While WTNT's Mount Vernon-based 730 AM signal is strong by day, it drops to a low-power level after sunset. WTNT runs "America's Morning News," Andy Parks' new Washington Times afternoon...

A familiar voice is back. Veteran radio host and newsman Andy Parks will return to the Washington airwaves with an afternoon program that combines his inimitable personality with a powerful news source and established media brand. “Andy Parks Live From The Washington Times” debuts Aug. 22 from a studio overlooking the newsroom of The Washington Times. The afternoon drive-time show from 3 to 6 p.m. will be heard on Metro Radio Inc. stations WTNT-AM (730) and WKDL-AM (1250), and streamed live on washingtontimes.com and 730wtnt.com.
  • D.C.'s new conservative talk "WTNT" is at 730 AM, thanks to a sale

It’s been just over a month since Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder blew up the talk format on WTNT at 570 and turned it into an ESPN-based all-sports station. That move stranded a talk lineup that included TRN’s Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage and Jerry Doyle. Now there’s a new home for those shows and more, and it is also claiming the “WTNT” call letters, per an FCC filing. The station is WXTR at 730, licensed to Alexandria, VA. DCRTV.com reports the format change, and says it’s part of a sale from Snyder’s Red Zebra Broadcasting to Metro Radio. The new...
  • D.C.'s getting another all-sports station on Monday: "Sports Talk 570"

The speculation about Daniel Snyder-controlled Red Zebra Broadcasting dropping talk on WTNT (570) was on the money, with the company confirming a flip to an ESPN-powered all-sports format on Monday, September 20. That would bookend Red Zebra’s existing all-sports station, WTEM (980). WTEM already carries the ESPN flag and there may be adjustments there. 570 appears to be carrying more of the ESPN Radio lineup, including Colin Cowherd, Scott Van Pelt, Doug Gottlieb and Brian Kenny. Though the morning show will be locally-familiar Steve Czaban, distributed by Sporting News Radio.

Former KSFO conservative talk radio co-host, provacateur and activist Melanie Morgan resigned from her nationally-syndicated radio show Monday for health reasons. We connected with Morgan Monday. She says "I'm fine," but wanted to return to the Bay Area from Washington, D.C. to be near family and friends as she continues to explore what she calls her "health challenge." In a note to listeners Monday, Morgan said, "Yes, it's true. I am leaving the radio. For a while." "I have resigned from America's Morning News with a tremendous amount of sadness," Morgan writes. "I have some health issues that I need...

The cult of personality appears to have ebbed a bit since Barack Obama had to begin governing two weeks ago. The Washington DC radio station calling itself Obama 1260 and featuring liberal talk stalwarts Bill Press, Ed Schultz, and Stephanie Miller has given up the ghost already, a victim of undetectable ratings. Howard Kurtz notes that not all political radio has that problem: President Obama may be riding high in Washington, but OBAMA 1260 is not. The area’s only progressive talk station is changing formats, dropping such syndicated liberal hosts as Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller and Bill Press in favor...
  • D.C. Station Dumps Failing Liberal 'Obama 1260' Talk Format (after 11 days)

Liberals may want to insist on the "Fairness Doctrine" as a business strategy, since liberal talk is barely moving the ratings needle. The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz reported Monday that "President Obama may be riding high in Washington, but OBAMA 1260 is not. The area's only progressive talk station is changing formats, dropping such syndicated liberal hosts as Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller and Bill Press in favor of financial news, starting next week." Technically, Kurtz is wrong, excluding NPR affiliate WAMU (which airs a number of liberal talk shows and zero conservative ones) and radical Pacifica station WPFW. It would...
