Which school has the best fight song? The debate has been raging for years and will continue to rage long after any of us are alive. The truth is that the context in which the song is played is often more important than the song itself. For example, you're sitting in Michigan Stadium watching your beloved Wolverines face Ohio State in a tight game. With a minute remaining and Michigan up by three, the Buckeyes are marching down the field and threatening to score when Leon Hall intercepts a Troy Smith pass and returns it for a touchdown, sealing the...

Washington State University’s web site calls the school “an ideal place to live and learn” and promises prospective students that instead of “smog or traffic jams,” they will find “an easy-going pace and eclectic college-town atmosphere.” Here’s something else WSU students don’t find much of on the Pullman campus – freedom of speech. Hecklers who shout down speakers at WSU sometimes do so on tax dollars. Hitler used Nazi thugs called “Brown Shirts” to silence opponents as he sought power in pre-war Germany. Today at WSU, the people paying the hecklers are called “administrators.” Here are the basic facts of...

In examining the current two-party system, it becomes clear that a growing majority of Americans fit into the conservative movement. It is agreed that both parties are moving further to the right and left, respectively, but it has been Republicans that have grown their base by facing issues realistically, and by spreading hope instead of despair. Republicans are gaining the support of mainstream, rational-thinking people whose party affiliation was previously tenuous.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Jennifer Granholm has a question for college students: What makes a cool city? The governor's Cool Cities Initiative is designed to make Michigan more attractive to young college graduates, many of whom are moving to the Sun Belt to start careers and families. "We're all really most interested in hearing from you, the students, the ones who are making the decisions," Granholm said Thursday during a forum at Northern Michigan University. "This is not a top-down movement to create cool. It's bottom-up." The forum is among three Granholm has scheduled to solicit student opinions. One...
