In examining the current two-party system, it becomes clear that a growing majority of Americans fit into the conservative movement. It is agreed that both parties are moving further to the right and left, respectively, but it has been Republicans that have grown their base by facing issues realistically, and by spreading hope instead of despair. Republicans are gaining the support of mainstream, rational-thinking people whose party affiliation was previously tenuous.

reasons for rightward shift in America

The abuses of the left, starting roughly in the late 1960s.

Some of the upper midwest states are starting to trend gop so if and when this does happen, hopefully they'll be able to make it up for us.

You allude, I presume, to the political tendencies of the growing Hispanic population.

Sorry to disillusion you, but the majority of Hispanics in Texas are conservative. Tony Sanchez, whom the 'Rats ran for governor last time around, didn't even get a majority in the Hispanic community.

Good article. Thanks. I used to read the campus paper when I attended Wayne State (1969-1973).

The vast majority of Bush voters would have been called "moderates" 40 years ago. The Left has gone way left, and that's the real shift.
