... Like in the Chicago area, the New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco metro areas — among the most expensive to live in the U.S. — saw decreases due to people moving out. Though they recorded more births than deaths in 2021, that increase was not enough to offset the migration out of the area. ... “There is clearly a dispersion, but I think it’s a blip,” William Frey, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s metropolitan policy program, Brookings Metro, told The Associated Press. “We’re at one of the lowest levels of immigration in a long, long time, and...

Illinois lost about 33,700 residents, dropping the total population to 12,802,023, the greatest numeric population loss of any state. Pennsylvania saw a slight increase, and with a total population of 12,805,537, has outranked Illinois for the first time in years, based on U.S. Census Bureau figures from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017. This is the fourth year in a row that Illinois’ population decreased, a troubling trend, according to William Frey, a demographer...

America reached an important milestone in 2011. That occurred when, for the first time in the history of the country, more minority babies than white babies were born in a year. Soon, most children will be racial minorities: Hispanics, blacks, Asians, and other nonwhite races. And, in about three decades, whites will constitute a minority of all Americans ... This milestone signals the beginning of a transformation from the mostly white baby boom culture that dominated the nation during the last half of the twentieth century to the more globalized, multiracial country that the United States is becoming ...
