The nation's capital is now under a blizzard watch, the first watch of its kind issued in advance of Winter Storm Jonas. Now is the time to prepare for Winter Storm Jonas, which is expected to kick into high gear Friday and pummel parts of the East through the weekend with heavy accumulations of snow and ice. Strong winds will likely add to the threat of power outages and may also bring serious coastal flooding along parts of the Atlantic coast. The National Weather Service issued the blizzard watch late Wednesday morning for Washington, D.C., and nearby Baltimore. The watch...

Cave skeleton is European, 1,300 years old, man says Archaeologist group wants a look at evidence Sunday September 29, 2002 By Rick Steelhammer STAFF WRITER MORGANTOWN — The man who first advanced the theory that markings carved on in a Wyoming County cave are actually characters from an ancient Irish alphabet has found human remains at the site, which tests indicate are European in origin and date back to A.D. 710, he maintains. Robert Pyle of Morgantown says that a DNA analysis of material from the skeleton’s teeth roots was conducted by Brigham Young University. That analysis, he says, shows...

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- Tuesday marks the 48th anniversary of the Silver Bridge collapse that killed 46 people and changed a small West Virginia town forever. It happened Dec., 15, 1967, during rush hour traffic in Point Pleasant. The investigation of the collapse pointed to a single eyebar in a suspension chain due to a defect. All but two victims were found in the debris. The bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge two years later in 1969. *Photo from WV Archives at the Culture Center VIDEO ON LINK

...The latest touchstone of liberal policy, the regulation of greenhouse-gas emissions, is causing economic destruction and pushing poverty higher in the Appalachians. But those backing the climate-change agenda are doing their best to keep this reality hidden from the public. Since 2012, 27 coal-mining companies with core operations in Central Appalachia, a region roughly centered in southern West Virginia, have filed for bankruptcy protection. The list includes a number of large-cap, publicly traded entities, such as Alpha Natural Resources, James River Coal and Patriot Coal. Production of coal in southern West Virginia declined by 45% between the first half of...

Here’s what happens if astronomers make contact with a civilization on another planet. The false alarm happened in 1997. The Green Bank Radio Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, was picking up some unusual signals—and Seth Shostak, then the head of the Center for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Research in Mountain View, Caifornia, was convinced that they had come from intelligent life somewhere in the universe. “It looked like it might be the real deal,” Shostak recalled. Within a few hours, he had a call from The New York Times. But within a day, it became clear that the source...

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Shelley Brannon, 62, can sum up the Obama presidency with three words. Well, three words and an exclamation. “He screwed us,” said Brannon, a coal miner from Wise County, Va., as he sat outside a rally for the United Mine Workers of America. “Man, he screwed us.” He shook his head under a camouflage hat that matched his camouflage UMWA T-shirt, and he described his fantasy of dumping nuclear waste in the yards of environmentalists, “if they think coal’s so bad.” He mulled over the mistake he says the UMWA made in 2008, when it endorsed Barack...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Former President Bill Clinton, in a keynote address to West Virginia Democrats on Friday night, touched on background checks for gun owners in the wake of the Oregon community college mass shooting. “Those of us who grew up in hunting country—and who believe the 2nd Amendment guarantees everybody the right to keep a gun to go hunting, to sports shoot and to protect themselves and their families—most of us think it’s crazy that we don’t do background checks,” Clinton said. Ticket sales for the party’s Jefferson-Jackson fundraising dinner spiked upon news of Clinton’s appearance. About 2,000 people...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Across the country Saturday, pro-life supporters got together to protest Planned Parenthood with the goal of getting the federal government to cut funding for the organization. Closer to home, a group gathered at the Women’s Choice Clinic in Charleston. Dozens gathered outside the clinic Saturday afternoon and were just a few of the thousands protesting Planned Parenthood nationwide. “They are harming unborn children, and even the parents in the meantime. They’re harming the mothers who come in. Not only physically, but emotionally,” Amanda Perkins said. Planned Parenthood has been in the spotlight recently when videos of employees...

Contrary to the assertions of many, voter fraud is not a myth. It is a stark reality that exists nationwide, from the rural counties of Georgia to the urban centers of New York. The Heritage Foundation has documented nearly 250 cases where nefarious citizens, officials, candidates and campaign operatives conspired to commit vote fraud, compromising the integrity of our elections to achieve their ideological goals. That list is just a tiny sampling of voter fraud, and it keeps growing. In May, the Heritage Foundation highlighted several recent cases. Here are some of the egregious new additions to the voter fraud...
