It’s the Truvada conundrum: A drug hailed as a lifesaver for many people infected by HIV is at the heart of a rancorous debate among gay men, AIDS activists and health professionals over its potential for protecting uninfected men who engage in gay sex without using condoms. Many doctors and activists see immense promise for such preventive use of Truvada, and are campaigning hard to raise awareness of it as a crucial step toward reducing new HIV infections, which now total about 50,000 a year in the U.S. Recent efforts range from think-tank forums and informational websites to a festive...

Japan’s latest eating contest puts Coney Island’s famous hot dog-eating contest to shame. At least most people like hot dogs. The city of Mito in Japan recently held a speed-eating contest to see which contestant could eat the most natto: a slimy, fermented bean paste that, according to the Japanese blog Kotaku, “smells like dirty socks.” Natto has been dubbed by foreigners (and some Japanese), as the nation’s most disgusting food. It may well be Japan’s vegemite. Natto is made from fermented soybeans, and looks like its held together by sticky strings. In Eastern Japan it’s known as a delicacy,...

After being publicly sacked by al Qaeda leader Aymann al-Zawahiri and accidentally beheading a fighter from one of their main allies in Syria, it’s fair to say the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS)’s PR campaign has suffered in recent weeks. So, like any half decent group of militant extremists, they obviously want to address this slip. Unfortunately, a traditional media outreach is very difficult for them, given ISIS’s policy of kidnapping journalists. So they've turned, like many before them, to social media. Over the past few weeks, foreign fighters from ISIS and their subgroup the Muhajireen Brigade have been...

Lahore (Pakistan) (AFP) - While many children his age are still learning how to crawl, a nine-month-old boy in Pakistan has been accused of attempted murder in a case observers say highlights endemic flaws in the country's legal system. Inspector Kashif Muhammad, who attended the alleged crime scene and has since been suspended, wrote in his report that it was a case...

A couple walked into the Wabegon Bar, flummoxed. "Where the hell are we?" they asked. The bartender had heard it before. That's because the Wabegon is the only bar in Wisconsin you can't get to through Wisconsin. "Unless you canoe here," said regular Bill Talarico. The bar is just off a stretch of Minnesota 23 known at the Evergreen Memorial Scenic Drive, which stretches diagonally from Duluth to the far reaches of southwest Minnesota. Just outside of Duluth, though, after the road leaves down-on-its-heels Gary-New Duluth, it crosses the St. Louis River and passes through a spit of Wisconsin barely...

WYOMING – An animal exodus at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming has residents and tourist wondering if they know something they don’t. Bison and many other animals are leaving Yellowstone in droves, and its prompting theories that minor earthquakes in the area could soon set off the Yellowstone Super Volcano. Japan's Kit Kat fixation, it seems, has reached critical mass. 1P After numerous Kit Kat flavors and even a specialty boutique, Japan is getting Kit Kat pizzas from delivery chains Strawberry Cones and Napoli no Kama (which, yes, is owned by Strawberry Cones). Fret not, they're sweet. These are "desert pizzas" with mango and baked Kit Kats on pizza dough. A small Kit Kat pizza is 1,390 yen ($13.40) from Strawberry Cones, while Napoli no Kama has a medium for 1,680 yen ($16.20). There do not appear to be other sizes. P And how do they taste? According to Twitter...

I have, for the last two or three years, done an April Fools Day thread. One, for example, said I would no longer post "I'd hit it". Another time, I posted that Google apologized for a Socialist doodle. Another time, I opused. But this year, I will not be posting an April Fools day thread. It's time to get serious in America. We need to stop screwing around and joking. These are tough, bitter times, and there is no room for humor or petty little 'April Fools Day' threads. Let's get over this stupid tradition, shall we?
