  • WEEI hits mute button for sensitivity training as sponsors walk

Money talks. Loud enough that WEEI’s talkers are giving the city a daylong moment of silence. In an unprecedented move, Entercom execs are pulling the plug on WEEI’s live programming tomorrow so the sports station’s button-pushing talk jocks can undergo sensitivity training after several advertisers jumped ship. “It’s a matter of the corporate world of broadcast media colliding with the politically incorrect culture of sports talk radio,” said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers Magazine. “I salute Entercom for the effort. However, sensitivity training for sports talk hosts is like teaching NFL players how to tackle gently.”

There are many New England Patriots and Boston sports fans who live outside of the local New England broadcast area. (Thanks to Al Gore's greatest invention, the internet, we're able to listen to local sports radio, even if Alexa doesn't understand "Boston WEEI".) We finally got Alexa to tune into the right "WEEI", and then we heard two Democrat windbags bashing President Trump, the false missile alert in Hawaii, the ridiculous new American embassy in England, birth control access, Trenni's vagina, her boyfriend and her mother's diaphragm. Evidently Trenni Kusnierek and John Tomase, "Trenni and Tomase", don't care so much about sports...

A political writer for the Boston Globe was forced to resign due to sexual harrassment. The paper refused to release his name but yesterday Kirk Minihane of radio station WEEI said it was Jim O'Sullivan; today, public radio station WGBH also confirms it was O'Sullivan. He is no longer on the paper's website and has not tweeted in a month. Tori Bedford of WGBH: "Even if you already knew this, somebody needed to report it with vetted sources, so here it is: "@wgbhnews confirmed that one of the accused Globe employees is Jim O’Sullivan, a political reporter who...resigned in late...

The station will carry the full lineup of ESPN Radio programming. Also announced was a tighter integration with ESPNBoston.com, the audio stream for WEEI 93.7 FM will be available through ESPNBoston.com and ESPNBoston’s video player will power WEEI’s video player with content from ESPN. Entercom responds to the pressure from CBS Radio's "Sports Hub" WBZ-FM (98.5), and will announce Thursday morning that it will simulcast its longtime sports station WEEI (850) on 93.7, starting Monday. That displaces variety hits "Mike FM" WMKK, which has moved [ratings] 2.8 to 2.9 to 3.2 with age 6+ Average Quarter Hour shares in the last three Personal People Meter monthly books. WEEI, carrying the baseball Red Sox, has moved 3.9-3.5-4.3. "Sports Hub" WBZ-FM has moved up and down (5.2-2.6-3.4), but has been making particular inroads with WEEI's younger male listeners. “Mike” replaced the previous “Star” AC format on...
  • WHO’S YOUR SANTA? (And: Will Boston's WEEI move to FM?)

    Weekly Dig (Boston) ^ | 11/27/10 | Weekly Dig/Media Farm
THE NEVER-ENDING BLATHER of Boston sports talk radio has been a hot topic of late as WBZ-FM‘s 98.5 station, “The Sports Hub,” has started to dominate the land of chattering idiots. For years, the king of call-in complaining in Boston was WEEI, which is on the AM dial at 850 kHz. WBZ, however, is on the FM dial, thereby making it not sound like an irritated toaster. The Sports Hub was introduced in August 2009 to great fanfare and has since started to corner the market on nannering nincompoops. Most recently, it was reported that WBZ The Sports Hub had...
  • Big dough for ’Big O’ Glenn Ordway... and maybe a TV gig

Afternoon drive king Glenn Ordway has inked a lucrative deal to stay at sports radio powerhouse WEEI that could also land the talkmeister on TV. Ordway signed a five-year deal with the station worth more than $1 million per year and is negotiating to bring his highly rated “Big Show” to television, sources told the Herald. The TV deal could mean even more money for both Ordway and WEEI-AM (850) owner Entercom. The deal with Entercom includes the likelihood that Ordway’s radio show will be simulcast on a sports cable network, possibly Comcast SportsNet or NESN. The video of Ordway’s...

One of the most twisted and convoluted chapters in Boston radio history will come to an end on Monday as John Dennis and Gerry Callahan are scheduled to return to the airwaves at WEEI 850 AM for their 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. shift, Scott's Shots has learned. Negotiations throughout the weekend - involving Entercom president and CEO David Field - yielded a five-year deal for both hosts. No further details are available at this time, but the announcement is expected to made at the beginning of the Monday morning show, which Shots will live-blog for the first of hour...
  • Radio deal has Dennis and Callahan boxed out (New England regional sports network)

In sports lingo, you might say Dennis and Callahan have been boxed out. Entercom Communications Corp., the parent corporation for WEEI sports radio, has cut a syndication deal to place its sports content on 11 Nassau Broadcasting radio stations around New England. But more importantly, Entercom also is buying 50 percent of a 12th station, WCRB, a classical music station owned by Nassau that was said to be in negotiations with WEEI’s premier sports talk hosts, John Dennis and Gerry Callahan, who have been off the air in a contract dispute with WEEI. Under that possible deal, WCRB would have...
  • WEEI sports hosts ‘locked out’: Station says Dennis, Callahan given time to ‘reflect’

Today’s long-anticipated on-air reunion of WEEI Sports Radio co-hosts John Dennis and Gerry Callahan has been scratched by the station, which has taken the pair off the air indefinitely amid unraveling contract talks and rumors of defection. The highly rated morning hosts say they’ve been locked out. The radio station calls it a chance to “reflect.” “For me to be locked out on the week that we do the Jimmy Fund Radiothon breaks my heart,” Dennis told the Herald yesterday. “It’s the most important thing we do all year long.” George Regan, spokesman for WEEI (850 AM) and its owner...
  • WBCN: The (male) talk of Boston?

Now don’t breathe a word of this. Because nobody’s supposed to know. But rumor in radioland is that struggling rock station WBCN may be trying to woo sports yakkers John Dennis and Gerry Callahan away from WEEI. The broadcast blather has it that parent company CBS may be looking at changing the legendary Boston music station to a sports-talk or the so-called male-talk format. “In Pittsburgh, CBS just switched WRKZ, a rock station, to a male-talk station,” said one industry insider. “So it’s not unheard of.” But others in the know say the station could be pursuing WEEI’s top-rated morning...

The owner of radio stations WEEI and WRKO, fresh from signing one of Major League Baseball's most expensive radio rights deals, has found a way to get some money back: selling naming rights to the Red Sox radio network. ``We'll be right back on the WEEI/WRKO (Your Company Name) Red Sox Radio Network," proclaims promotional material for the deal. Entercom Communications Corp., parent of the two stations, plans to mail out requests for proposals to 25 top advertisers this week to gauge their interest in the five-year agreement. The asking price: several million dollars a year.

In a stunning turn of events, radio company Greater Media this morning pulled out of the long-running bidding war with Entercom Communications for broadcasting rights for Boston Red Sox games. Sources say Entercom has won the hotly contested battle for Red Sox play-by-play. Entercom, parent company of local stations WEEI-AM (850) and WRKO-AM (680), is the only remaining bidder. WEEI, the top sports talker in the country, has been the longtime partner with the Sox. Entercom’s bid was said to have offered the Sox an option to buy an equity stake in WRKO in the future. Sources say that under...

"Radio bases loaded : Sox to change channels "Red Sox, Entercom, and Greater Media are all about to end playing hardball any minute now. While Sox and Greater Media managements remains mum, some of their personnel are now openly bragging around town that the Sox broadcasts will move from WEEI AM 850 after 12 years. The shortly-to-be-announced "done deal" has the Sox purchasing a majority interest in WBOS 92.9FM with Greater Media retaining a remaining share of the station. A Sox source tells BRW that the deal may be announced as soon as Monday(4/24)."
  • Sox near radio-rights deal: WBOS-FM said to have edge

The Boston Red Sox are within days of announcing a blockbuster multimillion-dollar radio-rights deal that could dramatically reshuffle the team’s broadcast lineup, executives close to the deal said. The Sox are in ninth-inning negotiations with media companies vying for the deal, with Greater Media’s WBOS-FM (92.9) having an edge, executives said. An agreement could be announced early next week, if not sooner, executives said. The price could hit $14 million per year. Sources say both Greater Media and Entercom, whose WEEI-AM (850) is the incumbent, have offered that much. But Entercom is said to be offering cash, while Greater Media...

Team in talks to buy 25% stake in station The Red Sox are negotiating with the owner of radio station WBOS to take an ownership stake in the station and move its radio broadcast rights there, a move that would effectively end the team's relationship with Boston's dominant sports station, WEEI. The talks are ongoing, and no deal has been reached, according to three executives briefed on the situation. WEEI could still make a rich, last-minute bid to retain the right to broadcast Sox games, though the executives said that appears less likely than it did last year. If WBOS...

"When is sports talk radio not just sports talk radio? When you tune into sports talk shows in major cities around the country and find talk that is not all sports, all the time. You still get sports chatter, but in morning and evening drive-time hours on these stations, you will find something different, something called ''Guy Talk" radio. ..."Ordway says there is a formula that all sports radio stations use: Target the 25-54 male group and then try to draw others in, but always be aware of the core group. ''In Boston, it's Red Sox and Patriot fans," said...

The big buzz burning up the sports wires isn't the Patriots' chances against the Carolina Panthers this weekend. It's WEEI sports yakker John Dennis' profane, inane but ever-so-entertaining ramblings left on the voice mail of radio rival Ryen Russillo of 1510 The Zone. Which, we are pleased to announce, have finally made the Internet! As we told you last month, the telephone contretemps arose between the broadcasters after Dennis' daughter, Emily, dished to her dad that the drunken ''Diehard'' tried to pick her up at a party. Ryen told the Track Dino didn't have all the facts and wrote him...
