The violence that turns a small-town protest into a fiery national spectacle like the one that has played out this month in Missouri is often unwittingly provoked by police, according to researchers at UC Berkeley. The research team, which studied clashes between police and activists during the Occupy movement three years ago, found that protests tend to turn violent when officers use aggressive tactics, such as approaching demonstrators in riot gear or lining up in military-like formations.

Antonio Smith liked to tease girls and show off his dance moves in front of his buddies. He loved playing football. Pretty much like any 9-year-old boy.. Wednesday afternoon, Antonio was found in the backyard of a house in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side, shot in the chest, hands and arms. He died an hour later at Comer Children's Hospital, where his cousins were at a loss to explain why anyone would want to gun down the third-grader.

Another night of protests and violence erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, on Sunday evening as tensions remain high following the death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown at the hands of the police on August 9. The violence began to flare again around 9 p.m. local time as police in riot fear fired teargas on hundreds of protestors - including children - for encroaching on their command post. Authorities also used rubber bullets and several protesters have reported getting hit. Many of the marchers retreated, but a group of about 100 stood defiantly about two blocks away until getting hit by another...

You park your SUV in a space and you and your wife prepare to do some shopping. You open the door and a 300 pound jerk is near to the vehicle and he slams your door shut and yells at you and tells you to leave, and says your kind don't belong around here. You get out of the vehicle, and the jerk pushes you back into it, punches you in the face a few times, and for good measure, punches your wife in the mouth, splitting her lip. He walks away and you get out of your car, and...

People, like Obama and the race-baiting reverends, are in part to blame for the Black on White violence of the Knockout Game The race riots have begun. The Black Panthers have gotten their wish. Racist violence in order to create even more division has begun. . . by design. Barack Obama is at the center of the blame. He understands that culture is politics, division creates crisis, and during times of crisis the government can do things that the citizens would not normally allow them to do.

Why isn't Mexico doing more to deter unaccompanied minors from Central America from traversing Mexico to cross the U.S.-Mexico border? If this is a humanitarian crisis, then shouldn't Mexico be taking in its neighbors? Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs, Jose Antonio Meade, met with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board Tuesday, so I had a chance to ask him. His answer was instructive: Mexico offers health services for migrants passing through the country, he said, but when Mexican officials "find an unaccompanied minor within Mexico, he doesn't want to stay in Mexico." And: "At the core of the child's interest...

To be clear, in America's polite upper-middleclass circles, gay domestic violence is the hatred that dare not speak its name. Ditto "progressive" Australia. For the media class, at least, would prefer to talk about white picket fences, rainbow flags and same-sex wedding cakes. The message: Think pretty things. Still, even MSNBC can't wish away ugliness. As one underreported UCLA study found: Although reported incidences of intimate partner violence, or IPV, are widespread, especially among women and certain ethnic groups, reported IPV was surprisingly high among lesbians, gays and bisexuals in California, who are almost twice as likely to experience violence...

DETROIT – A young man who participated in a mob attack on a Detroit-area motorist needed a father to "beat the hell" out of him as a kid to discourage him from committing such a crime, a judge said Thursday. In response to the judge's question, Cummings, 19, said his father wasn't around when he was growing up.

A group of protesters in Chicago called for action and heavily criticized President Obama for ignoring the high rates of violent crime in the city while spending billions of dollars to deal with an influx of illegal child immigrants into the U.S. “Do something for our children,” said one of the protesters, in a video posted at the blog Rebel Pundit. “Have the same love for these young young people like you got for the ones across the border, and you want to save them.” “With the president setting aside all of these funds for immigrants, and forsaking the African...

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Mayor Emanuel are differing on where the fingers should be pointed when it comes to federal anti-violence help, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore. Rev. Jesse Jackson and Mayor Emanuel agree curbing violence involves not just police but economic development and jobs in high crime neighborhoods, but Rev. Jackson seemed to fault President Obama for funding priorities that appear to put immigrant children coming across the borders first. “If we can find $4 billion for those children, and we should, we can find $2 billion for Chicago,” said Jackson.

A “peace conference” sponsored by the leftist Israeli newspaper Haaretz devolved into violence on Tuesday when an Israeli government official was heckled and then punched in the back by an attendee, according to reports. Attendees at the Israel Conference on Peace—which was kicked off with an endorsement by President Barack Obama and features a who’s who of liberal speakers—began shouting hateful slogans and then accosted Knesset member Naftali Bennett after he defended the government’s military action, which was undertaken to stop Hamas terrorists from bombarding civilians with rockets. Left-leaning government officials who spoke at the conference condemned Hamas’ aggression and...

Last September, I noted how Deacon Scott Colley, the administrator (at least at the time if not still so) of the Facebook page for the North Quabbin Catholic Community, which includes several parishes in and around Athol, Massachusetts, banned me for taking issue with the applause which often breaks out during Holy Mass at Our Lady Immaculate Parish in Athol. See here. And back in 2011, I disagreed with Father Krzysztof Korcz when he blamed parents as being the sole cause of the lack of vocations and the exodus of young people from Catholic life. See here. Lastly, I noted...
