Pinehurst, N.C. — A local survivor of Pearl Harbor has spent a lifetime making sure people don't forget the terror that killed so many of his comrades. Roy "Swede" Boreen, 96, escaped a ship where more than 440 sailors were killed. He has lived in Pinehurst for more than 30 years, and Wednesday the community rallied around him in tribute. At age 21, Boreen prepared to die a terrible death, coated in oil, bobbing in sea water. Minutes earlier, he'd looked out a porthole aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma.

Diane Reiman, sister of Vietnam veteran Stephen Carl Reiman, is given the casket flag from her brother's coffin during his funeral on Tuesday morning at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville. Stephen Carl Reiman, who served in the Navy during the Vietnam war, died on Nov. 17, in Casper. The Department of Veterans Affairs has dropped plans to start covering gender transition surgery for veterans amid concerns about costs. The proposed rule change that would have allowed the VA to pay for such surgeries was withdrawn from the Fall 2016 Unified Agenda, a biannual publication of proposed regulation changes that was due Monday. “VA has been and will continue to explore a regulatory change that would allow VA to perform gender alteration surgery and a change in the medical benefits package, when appropriated funding is available,” the VA said in a statement Monday.
