Michelle Obama was briefly drowned out by applause as she joined host Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Jennifer Lopez at the beginning of the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. After Keys introduced the other four women as her sisters, each delivered short remarks about the power of music. The former first lady went last, and got only a few words into her remarks about wearing out old Motown Records when she grew up on the South Side of Chicago.

My fellow Americans: I feel like I need to say this. A lot of you are angry. You're concerned about what's going on right now, and you're worried about the future. You're disgusted by the actions of your political opponents, and you feel hope and anticipation whenever there's the slightest possibility that their goals will be thwarted. You're filled with dread when they're winning, and you're lifted into paroxysms of joyous schadenfreude when they fail. Good news: Those feelings are all you need! If there was ever a time in American history when it was worthwhile to pay attention to...

Sundance at The Conservative Tree House has written posts commenting on Ted Cruz's proselytizing as an electoral campaign strategy. Freepers have seen at least a couple of examples of this strategy recently, with threads being posted about Cruz calling on supporters to "don the full armor of God" to resist "incoming attacks" (presumably from dark forces!), or that the "Body of Christ" must be energized to gain the victory. This type of rhetoric is also heavily prominent in his campaign fund raising. One of the more epic and cringe inducing examples comes from an apparent leak by the Cruz campaign...

Forty something UK “journalist” Samantha Brick should be scored a perfect ten for achieving maximum publicity with minimum talent. Her cri de coeur about the downside of being so beautiful has impacted the world like a tsunami.

EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration Brussels bureaucrats were ridiculed yesterday after banning drink manufacturers from claiming that water can prevent dehydration. EU officials concluded that, following a three-year investigation, there was no evidence to prove the previously undisputed fact. Producers of bottled water are now forbidden by law from making the claim and will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month. Last night, critics claimed the EU was at odds with both science and common sense. Conservative MEP Roger Helmer said: “This is stupidity writ...

HONOLULU - President Obama's Hawaii retreat has been about as close as any president can get to a real vacation. At the risk of jinxing Mr. Obama, so far no major crisis or controversy has intruded into his get-away.

I don’t travel in liberal circles much, so last night was a real eye-opener as to how much this country is in deep doo-doo. I went to my brother’s house (Marin County, CA) for our family’s annual Dungeness crab feast. It’s no secret in my family that my political position is hard starboard at flank speed, so out of deference to the occasion I made a personal vow not to steer the conversation to current events. Alas, my best intentions were scuttled by my brother’s neighbor lady let slip a snarky comment about Sarah Palin not believing in global warming.

mid a sea of beehives, bouffants and buns, it was a remarkably low-key affair. In fact, Jennifer Aniston’s red-carpet hairstyle looks like something most of us could attempt with a decent pair of straightening irons and a bit of patience. But astonishingly, the sleek style cost the actress almost £40,000.
  • John McCain ad irritates many in Hollywood (as if the Drama Queens in Hollywood matter)

TO HOLLYWOOD it smacked of desperation. That's why the reaction to a new John McCain ad attempting to portray Barack Obama as a kind of mindless celebrity -- likening him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- drew collective yawns and shrugs of irritation from politically active members of the entertainment industry. "I didn't think McCain could look silly," mused Norman Lear. "But that ad diminishes him and makes him look silly." Just for a start, industry types say the ad is wrong: In the Hollywood lexicon, Obama is not a celebrity. He's a rock star. (Note to McCain strategists:...

The Space Needle fireworks are traditional. It was hysterical...three...two...one...nothing happened. They finally got it running...but there are so many comedy routines running through my head right now.... I had been watching a Bob Newhart special on PBS just before midnight...and I could just hear Bob say..."...now, did you try the green button...." You should have seen the anchors on TV....

Tonight I thought Kimberly was great, Clay was masterful as always considering he pulled a difficult song to sing, and Ruben was all right. Also however Unchained Melody was arranged, it sounded sped up (excuse my grammar) so I thought Clay worked well with that. And how fun was Mack the Knife! What did everyone else think? MOderator, sorry if I post this in the wrong place.
