USS Nimitz (CVN 68) has started from her homeport of Naval Base Coronado to perform sea trials at the western Pacific Ocean, for assessing its readiness and capability. The trails have begun from June 30. Later on, a 30-day carrier incremental availability (CIA) will be conducted when the ship will return from the extended deployment. "We have accomplished some high quality maintenance on critical equipment and systems during this availability, for the next few days we get to validate that work by putting the ship through its paces," Capt. Paul O. Monger, Nimitz commanding officer, said in an US Navy...

Kong Wednesday amid heightened tension between Washington and Beijing over arms sales to Taiwan and President Barack Obama's plan to meet the Dalai Lama. The stop by the USS Nimitz, one of the world's largest warships, came just weeks after China said it would suspend military and security contacts with the United States over Washington's 6.4-billion-dollar arms package for Taipei. It also coincided with a trip to Washington by exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama for a long-awaited meeting with Obama, a visit that has infuriated Beijing which has denounced him as a separatist bent on independence for his...

CARRIER - Life aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz This is a heads up. Next Sunday, April 27, PBS will begin airing a 10 part series which will run 2 hrs a night thru May 1. (check local listings for time) I think it will be very interesting, but not without PBS bias. Hopefully, they'll limit the bias to a minimum so that it doesn't ruin the series. I'm looking forward to it. You can watch clips at the source link above.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — U.S. and South Korean fighter jets scrambled to turn back a Russian reconnaissance aircraft that approached a U.S. aircraft carrier during training exercises, an official said Thursday. The Russian plane flew close to the USS Nimitz in waters off South Korea's eastern coast Wednesday, but retreated shortly after the allied warplanes approached, an official at the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said on condition of anonymity, citing office policy. Yonhap news agency quoted an unnamed military official saying two F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters from the carrier and four South Korean F-16 jets were deployed...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Russian bomber aircraft approached a U.S. aircraft carrier off the Korean coast on Wednesday and was intercepted by American fighter jets -- the second such incident in less than a month, U.S. defense officials said. As ANN reported, the Tu-95 flew over the Nimitz at about 2,000 feet while another bomber flew nearby February 9 -- but both were escorted by US aircraft and the event did not even warrant a call to "general quarters" or for crews to man battle stations, Navy Adm. Gary Roughead said. "I did not consider it to be provocative," he told reporters at a Pentagon news conference Tuesday. "We knew they were coming. We saw them coming. We detected them at the appropriate time. We launched our alert aircraft, who escorted the Russian aircraft. From my perspective, everything worked...

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The chief of the US Navy said Tuesday an overflight of a US aircraft carrier by a Russian bomber off Japan was "benign" and unprovocative, adding that US crew were not called to combat stations. Admiral Gary Roughead said he had not asked Moscow for an explanation, but offered one of his own: the Russian military is trying to re-emerge as a global force. "But I did not consider it to be provocative," he said of Saturday's overflight of the USS Nimitz in the western Pacific. "And, again, the way that our forces responded, our commanders responded,...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2008 – A weekend incident in which a Russian bomber “buzzed” the Nimitz battle group in the Pacific raises concerns about Russia’s intent and the message it was meant to send, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told Congress today. Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright told the Senate Budget Committee the encounter -- in which U.S. F/A-18 jets scrambled to intercept a Russian Tu-95 Bear bomber as it flew at 2,000 feet above the battle group -- ended without incident but raises big questions. U.S. forces detected two Russian Tu-95s early Feb. 9 as...

"The carrier and her escorts will assert their right...
