The unraveling of social cohesion has consequences. Once social cohesion unravels, the nation unravels. My recent posts have focused on the systemic financial risks created by Federal Reserve policies that have elevated moral hazard (risks can be taken without consequence) and speculation to levels so extreme that they threaten the stability of the entire financial system.These risks are well known, though largely ignored in the current speculative frenzy. But there is another systemic risk which few if any see: the collapse of social cohesion. It was a time of beheadings...It was a time of aggression...It was a time of breakup...It was a time of hatred.... It was a time of weakness. The most powerful nation on earth was tired of far-flung wars, its will and treasury depleted by absence of victory. An ungrateful world could damn well police itself. The nation had bridges to build and education systems to fix. Civil wars between Arabs could fester. Enemies might even kill other enemies, a low-cost gain. Middle Eastern borders could fade; they were artificial colonial lines on a map.

Yesterday was just another day in the rapidly unraveling Middle East. * Turkish news media reported that a Syria-bound Iranian cargo plane suspected of carrying nuclear material was forced to land in Turkey on Saturday for inspection. No nuke connection was found -- though, not surprisingly, inspectors did discover rocket launchers, mortars, rifles and explosives, which were all removed. The weapons may have been intended for use in Syria -- where five days of anti-government protests have led to a half-dozen deaths in a crackdown by security forces. Or, more likely, they may have been destined for Hamas-ruled Gaza, where...

The Hawaii Department of Health has reversed course. They now admit that they do - in fact – make some vital records information available to the public. This admission reverses their prior response pattern indicating that “no information” could be released.
