US trucking firm Yellow has laid off a large number of workers as the company copes with a cash crunch, and is reportedly weighing options including an imminent bankruptcy filing. The trucking giant on Friday told employees that it is 'shutting down regular operations' and laying off non-union employees 'at all of its locations' according to a memo seen by DailyMail.com. The layoffs could immediately impact up to 8,000 members of the company's sales force, business operations and technology departments -- and if the company fails, another 22,000 unionized drivers and freight handlers could face unemployment. Yellow is saddled with...

ROARING SPRING, Pennsylvania -- When the Appvion Inc. paper mill plant shut its doors for good on April 1, putting 293 people out of work, it marked the first significant manufacturing loss in this state since President Joe Biden took office. "We were all completely blindsided," said state Sen. Judy Ward, who claims she and other local officials had no hint that the plant, founded in 1866, was in danger of shuttering. If you received a stimulus check in the mail, there's a good chance the men and women who work here produced the paper it was printed on. And...

In an apparent pandering competition to win the favor of union voters, Democratic presidential candidates used the Ohio debate stage to blast General Motors on Tuesday night, blaming the automaker for the month-long strike with the United Auto Workers union. On the morning of the debate, reports had broken that GM and UAW leadership had reached a tentative agreement to end the month-long strike that impacted some 175,000 workers and cost GM roughly $1.2 billion. But reports of a possible end to the strike didn’t prevent Democratic candidates from forgoing their chance to bash the corporation and virtue-signal their support for...

California union workers will continue to be in the dark about how their dues are spent after a bill that would’ve forced unions to post this information online was killed along a party-line vote. California’s public employee unions used their muscle this week to fight back a legislative bid to open their books, killing in committee a bill that would force them to post online how dues are spent -- and a second bill requiring a union vote every two years. "These members want to belong to a union. They want to be represented by a union. They just want to...

With the 2016 presidential race beginning to take shape, liberals are ratcheting up their attacks on Republicans over labor issues and union benefits. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has been on the receiving end of renewed attacks by the left for his actions that critics say deprived public sector union members of their promised benefits. In New Jersey, there’s been open warfare between the teachers union and Gov. Chris Christie over pensions for retirees. The complaints have a familiar refrain: Democrats accuse Republicans of reneging on promises made to rank and file union members, eroding the benefits to which they’re entitled, and...

What do you do when a union vote doesn’t go your way? Well, if you are the United Auto Workers union, you ask for a “re-do”. The UAW has asked the National Labor Relations Board to reconsider their failed attempt to unionize Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga, because… Well because they think it was unfair that anti-union voices were allowed to make their case on TV, highway billboards, and newspaper columns. In other words: the UAW feels they were unfairly outgunned by free-speech. According to the Wall Street Journal: The UAW has filed an election objection with the labor board alleging...

The restructuring plan that Vallejo, Calif., is hammering out with creditors provides some assurances for skittish bondholders and pensioners about their fate in a municipal bankruptcy. But the case, one of the few recent bankruptcies of a city with outstanding debt, also shows that bondholders' odds of getting paid can depend on the type of bond they own and whether it is insured. And while Vallejo workers' pensions appear to be emerging unscathed, the case generated a ruling that cities could invoke in bankruptcy to break collective-bargaining agreements with unions, lawyers say. Vallejo, a city of about 120,000 people near...

The Board of Supervisors and Los Angeles County's largest union have reached a contract deal that will give more than 50,000 workers the largest salary and merit increases in decades, officials said Friday. The tentative three-year contract, which must be approved by the supervisors and ratified by members of Service Employees International Union, Local 660, would give most union members raises totaling up to 15.5 percent. The contract also calls for a 10 percent increase in the county's contribution to employee health plans and a benefit that would require the county to pay $75 to $375 a month to help...
