    Irish Times ^ | 05/11/2016 | Kitty Holland
The rights of people with disabilities, access to abortion services and prisoners’ rights were most frequently raised at the United Nations in Geneva today, where Ireland faced questioning on its human rights record. […] While six states — including Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden — had lodged advance questions on access to abortion services, the issue was raised by many more states at the session in Geneva, including Canada, France, the US, Lithuania, Macedonia, Switzerland, the Republic of Korea and Iceland. Slovenia recommended Ireland “decriminalize abortion in all circumstances and, as a minimum, ensure access to safe abortion also in...
  • Marco Rubio Reappears, Praises NATO and the United Nations

Senator Marco Rubiobot reappeared for his first “on camera” interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper since dropping out of the presidential primary race. Delivering and repeating his scripted and well-rehearsed talking points, a trademark of his political career, Rubio dismissed any notion that he would be a vice-presidential pick for Donald Trump and quixotically obfuscated away from any endorsement; preferring instead to repeat the ‘I-signed-a-pledge’ meme ad nauseam. The best part of the interview was toward the end. After Rubio praised NATO and the United Nations Jake Tapper correctly pointed out that Marco Rubio’s foreign policy, and global world view, is...

Natan Meir, husband of Dafna Meir who was stabbed to death in her home in Otniel, sent a letter to the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, condemning his attitude and alienating him and his daughter, Ranana, during their visit to the UN. ..... “In our presence, the Palestinian representative complained that hundreds of Palestinian children are in Israeli prisons. One of the children he talked about murdered my wife! Despite the terrible scandal of misrepresentation, nobody prevented him from continuing his speech,” wrote Meir. "Israel's UN ambassador introduced me and my daughter and told our story. Not one UN...

Following a presentation on law enforcement of Jewish radicals who attack West-Bank Palestinians at the UN, the Venezuelan ambassador accused Israel of carrying out 'final solution' for Palestinians. Venezuelan Ambassador to the UN Rafael Ramirez accused Israel of implementing a "final solution" against the Palestinians in the UN Security Council on Friday. "Is Israel trying to impose a 'final solution' on the Palestinians in the West Bank?" Ramirez asked at the Security Council meeting. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon immediately condemned the statement, and Ramirez apologized to "the Jewish people, if they were offended by my statement." The...

The 120-nation Nonaligned Movement headed by Iran accused the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday of violating international law by ruling that nearly $2 billion in frozen Iranian assets can be paid to victims of attacks linked to the country. A communiqué issued by the NAM’s Coordinating Bureau follows an Iranian appeal to the United Nations last week to intervene with the U.S. government to prevent the loss of their funds. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called the ruling an “outrageous robbery, disguised under a court order.” The NAM, comprising mainly developing countries, called the U.S. waiver of “the sovereign...

UN Assistant Secretary-General says 'no proof' Hamas uses construction material for 'military purposes.' UN Assistant Secretary-General Robert Piper claims that there is no proof that Hamas is taking advantage of UN-provided construction material for "military purposes," the pro-Hamas Middle East Monitor reports. He made his remark after Israel announced that it was blocking the transfer of cement into Gaza because Hamas uses it to build terror tunnels. Piper said that the United Nations has provided 1.2 million tons of construction materials to Gaza, though he did not explain why despite that very few reparations have been carried out since 2014's...

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will discuss providing international protection for Palestinians during an informal May 6 meeting, PLO Ambassador to the UN in New York Riyad Mansour said on Wednesday. “We would like to see an international force to separate between us and the Israeli occupying authorities,” Mansour said. Such a step is not feasible at this time, so it is possible for the UNSC to take a smaller step to help the Palestinians, he said. “Now the security council is beginning the discussion,” Mansour told reporters. The Palestinians have persistently called for the UNSC to hold a...
  • Oops! Federal Law Prohibits Obama Funding UN Climate Bureaucracy

Thanks to a Clinton-era statute and an obscure vote last month by the United Nations, federal law now officially makes it illegal for the Obama administration to send a single penny of your money to the UN climate bureaucracy. That is good news for U.S. taxpayers, of course. But it puts the UN and the Obama administration in an awkward position as they struggle desperately to convince other governments that the UN's much-touted “global-warming” regime, officially signed Friday, is not going to crumble in the face of a hostile Congress and a U.S. Constitution that has been trampled at every...

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is considering “alternative” ways to admit more Syrian refugees to the United States, beyond the current refugee resettlement program, according to the Center for Immigration Studies. “The legitimacy and transparency of these new ‘alternative pathways,’ aimed at admitting increasing numbers of Syrian refugees into the United States without calling them ‘refugees,’ remain to be seen,” CIS senior researcher Nayla Rush wrote in a report Monday. “They might even amount to convenient admissions detours at a time when the U.S. refugee resettlement program is under tight scrutiny

Not sure how this will turn out. This was something I saw earlier today that I thought was important. When I went back through threads, I couldn't find it. When I searched online and found this image, it said Free Republic had removed it. What I need to know is - was it removed because it was proven false, or because it was a Getty image or some other copyright issue? Very important to know. Thank you.

Presidents, prime ministers, dictators, and potentates from 175 countries gathered at the United Nations in New York Friday to sign the UN’s Paris climate accord, which proponents say is aimed at slowing the (fictitious) crisis of global warming by reducing manmade greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2). Secretary of State John Kerry (shown), with his granddaughter on his lap, signed for President Obama, who was returning from a trip to Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. President Obama declared last December, following the Paris summit that the newly-created pact "represents the best chance we have to save the one planet...

It’s not a good look for the convoy of a crusader against genocide to mow down a little African boy as her motorcade roars through a rural area at high speed (often exceeding 60 miles per hour on two-lane country roads), accompanied by a helicopter overhead, journalists in tow, eager for a photo op with refugees.  But that was the situation facing Samantha Power yesterday in Cameroon.  The Associated Press reports: U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power’s trip to Cameroon’s front lines in the war against Boko Haram started horrifically today as an armored jeep in her motorcade struck and killed...

There is a concerted effort among “Palestinians” and their supporters to erase all evidence of the historical connection of Jews to Israel. The UN, controlled by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, is a willing partner in these efforts. Besides being motivated by Islamic Jew-hatred, this endeavor is in line with the Islamic supremacist tendency to appropriate the holy places and sacred figures of other religions.“UNESCO Renames Western Wall ‘Al-Buraq Plaza,’” by Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz, Breaking Israel News, April 17, 2016 (thanks to Janice): On Friday, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Executive Board in Paris adopted a...

And there was little doubt who he was talking about The head of the United Nations Human Rights Office challenged the rhetoric of Republian presidential contender Donald Trump in a speech Friday, saying he and other presidential candidates had resurrected the “ugly phantom of racial and religious division.” In a reference to Trump, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, U.N. high commissioner for human rights, rued that “a front-running candidate to be President of this country declared, just a few months ago, his enthusiastic support for torture,” before condemning “hateful slander” leveled at foreigners.

Landmark event on 22 April to mark the record for highest number of countries signing an international treaty A record number of more than 130 countries will sign the landmark agreement to tackle climate change at a ceremony at UN headquarters on 22 April, the United Nations said on Thursday. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu blasted a UNESCO decision divorcing Judaism from the Temple Mount Saturday night, after a motion over the weekend only referred to the site with Arabic terminology. "This is yet another absurd UN decision," Netanyahu stated late Saturday. "UNESCO ignores the unique historic connection of Judaism to the Temple Mount, where the two temples stood for a thousand years and to which every Jew in the world has prayed for thousands of years." "The UN is rewriting a basic part of human history and has again proven that there is no low to which it will not...

Texting on mobile devices while driving is a growing "global killer" and not enough attention is being paid to the dangers of distracted drivers, Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said on Friday. The U.N. General Assembly said on Friday it had asked the secretary general to consider establishing a voluntarily funded Road Safety Trust Fund to support efforts to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from traffic accidents. Road crashes kill more than 1.25 million people and injure as many as 50 million people a year globally, according to the world body. It has urged...
