ORLANDO, Fla. - The tropics heated up overnight, as forecasters said that Tropical Storm Peter and Tropical Depression 17 formed. Tropical Storm Peter formed overnight over the open Atlantic, becoming the 16th named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. They said that the storm is moving towards the northwest at about 15 mph. By Sunday afternoon, it is expected to turn back toward west-northwest. Peter should pass well to the north of the Leeward Islands on Monday and Tuesday. The tropical storm is said to be currently packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph...
  • Blizzard hits Hawaii as record rainfall poised to end California drought

The blizzard in Hawaii and high levels of precipitation in California contrast sharply with the low snow levels across much of the rest of the country in 2017. It's been a strange year for weather so far, and a recent series of events has confounded expectations. On Tuesday and Wednesday, a blizzard hit mountaintops on Hawaii's Big Island. Most of the snow fell overnight, blanketing the summit of Mauna Kea with eight inches and making the road to the summit impassable. In California, meanwhile, record levels of rain and snow look set to lift much of the state out of...

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Even though the explosive spread of the Zika virus has been met with a new level of international response, thanks to lessons learned from the Ebola crisis, experts warn they are only beginning to grasp the damage the mosquito-borne virus can do. Doctors speaking at a U.N. meeting on Global Health Crises said Monday that the Zika virus has already affected 60 countries on four continents, and a major outbreak on the Atlantic Ocean island nation of Cape Verde suggests the disease is now poised to enter continental Africa. Zika has already become epidemic in Latin...

The Dare County Control Group has issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents and visitors on Hatteras Island beginning at 5:00 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2014. After 5:00 a.m. Thursday, no access will be allowed to Hatteras Island. All Hatteras Island residents and visitors are advised to evacuate as quickly as possible during daylight hours on Thursday before the effects of Tropical Storm Arthur begin to bring high winds, rough seas, dangerous rip currents, and the potential for water and sand overwash on NC Highway 12. A State of Emergency has been issued for all of Dare County with the...

African Ice Core Analysis Reveals Catastrophic Droughts, Shrinking Ice Fields, Civilization Shifts COLUMBUS, Ohio – A detailed analysis of six cores retrieved from the rapidly shrinking ice fields atop Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro shows that those tropical glaciers began to form about 11,700 years ago. The cores also yielded remarkable evidence of three catastrophic droughts that plagued the tropics 8,300, 5,200 and 4,000 years ago. Lastly, the analysis also supports Ohio State University researchers' prediction that these unique bodies of ice will disappear in the next two decades, the victims of global warming. These findings were published today in the journal...

See: NOAA National Hurricane Center Web Site To keep up to date... It appears Tropical Depression Nine might be one to watch. It might provide much needed rain to drought stricken parts of the South. But it might also wreak havoc with the GOP Convention. Also it might wreak havoc on the Gulf Coast... The Gulf of Mexico is quite potent this time of year to produce storms with exceptionally warm water and conditions. Might be something to follow...
  • Giant Tropical Lake Found On Saturn Moon Titan

An oasis of liquid methane has unexpectedly been discovered amid the tropical dunes of Saturn's moon Titan, researchers say. This lake in the otherwise dry tropics of Titan hints that subterranean channels of liquid methane might feed it from below, scientists added. Titan has clouds, rain and lakes, like Earth, but these are composed of methane rather than water. However, methane lakes were seen only at Titan's poles until now — its tropics around the equator were apparently home to dune fields instead.

Climate change is rapidly expanding the size of the world's tropical zone, threatening to bring disease and drought to heavily populated areas, an Australian study has found. Researchers at James Cook University concluded the tropics had widened by up to 500 kilometres (310 miles) in the past 25 years after examining 70 peer-reviewed scientific articles. They looked at findings from long-term satellite measurements, weather balloon data, climate models and sea temperature studies to determine how global warming was impacting on the tropical zone. The findings showed it now extended well beyond the traditional definition of the tropics, the equatorial band...

Seabed scratches show icebergs reached the tropics 09 June 2008 NewScientist.com news service ICEBERGS often etch out messages on the shallow ocean floor. Now a newly discovered set of scratches suggests bergs from the icy north drifted further south than we thought after the last ice age. The meltdown of North American ice sheets about 15,000 years ago released a flotilla of icebergs into the Atlantic. Gouges left by bergs on the ocean bed have previously been found off New Jersey, close to the southernmost edge of the ice sheet, but it had been thought that looping currents would have...

Off of the East Coast of South America satellite imagery is showing a potential tropical cyclone developing. The South Atlantic Ocean is the rarest place among the world's oceans, outside of the Arctic, for Tropical Cyclone development. There have been only three recorded tropical cyclones. In 1991, one formed off of the coast of Angola in April. In 2004, there were two. The first, in January, made landfall near Salvador, Brazil. The second, called Catalina, made landfall in the Catalina province of Brazil as a hurricane. Now, the Naval Research Labratory is tracking and monitoring this system shown above and...
