Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Nato Secretary General, said he had received commitments from 25 countries and details would be announced in the coming weeks. He said he also expected more pledges to follow an international conference on Afghanistan in January. Yesterday's meeting of Nato ministers in Brussels raised an extra 3,200 troops on top of the 3,800 soldiers pledged in the last month, including 500 from Britain and 1,000 from Italy. It came as Hillary Clinton, the United States Secretary of State, called on the alliance to rally behind the American-led surge of troops planned in 2010. "This is our fight,...

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced he was pouring 30,000 more troops into Afghanistan, vowing to "seize the initiative" to end the unpopular war and start a pullout in July 2011. In a significant speech unveiling a new fast-track war strategy, Obama pledged for the first time that US forces would start coming home in 19 months, as he groped for an exit from a conflict many backers see as a Vietnam-style quagmire. "Afghanistan is not lost, but for several years, it has moved backwards," Obama said, placing a bet that more forces could defeat al-Qaeda, crush a resurgent...

WASHINGTON — Signaling he's decided on new troop levels for the Afghanistan war, President Barack Obama said Tuesday he intends to "finish the job" on his watch and destroy terrorist networks in the region. The president said he would reveal his decision on how many additional soldiers to deploy to Afghanistan after Thanksgiving. The White House is aiming for an announcement by Obama either Tuesday or Wednesday in a national address. Congressional hearings will quickly follow. Military officials and others have been expecting Obama to settle on a middle-ground option that would deploy an eventual 32,000 to 35,000 U.S. forces...

February 9, 2008 Nicolas Sarkozy offers French troops to join Canadians in fighting the Taleban in Kandahar Michael Evans, Defence Editor President Sarkozy rode to the rescue of beleaguered Nato forces in southern Afghanistan yesterday when he offered to deploy French troops alongside Canadians in Kandahar. The French leader has been the most forthcoming of Nato leaders in answering the urgent call to help the troops fighting Taleban insurgents. After Canada’s repeated warnings that it would pull its 2,500 troops out of Kandahar if no other alliance member came to support them, France has been the only country to hint...

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) — The upper chamber of the Czech Parliament agreed overwhelmingly Thursday to deploy chemical weapons troops to Iraq in the event of war. The vote in the Czech Senate was 70-3, with three abstentions and five absent. The decision still needs the approval of the lower chamber of the parliament. Under the measure, the unit could be sent to treat soldiers injured by chemical or biological weapons attacks — with or without a U.N. Security Council resolution calling for their deployment.
