Global methane rise slowing down Farmers reduce emissions and make money by collecting methane The rise in concentrations of the greenhouse gas methane in the atmosphere has slowed down considerably in recent years, research suggests.Scientists say levels have been stable for about seven years following a steep rise during the last century. Researchers believe the slowdown may be due to measures aimed at reducing the release of methane from gas pipelines, paddy fields and landfill sites. The findings are published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The study also found that major forest fires, such as occurred in Indonesia...

TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) - A damaged, century-old dam continued to hold Tuesday as the water level behind it was reduced, but an evacuation order remained in effect and schools and highways were closed amid fears of a flood. Mayor Robert Nunes said the wooden Whittenton Pond Dam upstream from the city on the Mill River had developed more failures about 2 a.m. However, gates in the dam were opened to release water from Lake Sabbatia and relieve pressure on the structure, and the reservoir's level had fallen several inches by late morning, officials said at a briefing. "As the water...

There are two kinds of homes in New Orleans' historic French Quarter, says Allen Fugler, vice president of marketing for Lipca, an insurer of pest-control operator: "homes that have Formosan termites and those that will get them fairly soon". Indeed, the vicious Formosan subterranean termite, dubbed "super termite" by Louisiana State University's agriculture research and extension center, has infested nearly all of the houses and 30 percent of the trees in greater New Orleans, costing homeowners and the state and federal governments $300 million annually in repairs and prevention efforts. Unlike ordinary termites, these pests can literally destroy a wood-framed...

We are in the process of getting estimates on a patio cover and cement for the flooring. The salesman told me today that they spray for termites where the gound will be "disturbed" due to the pouring of concrete. Is this a must to have done? Advise as this would add $200 to the cost.
  • Termites Could Hold the Key to Self-Sufficient Buildings

    09/22/2004 3:18:10 AM PDT · by Teflonic · 20 replies · 621+ views
Mounds built by highly-evolved African termites could inspire new types of building that are self-sufficient, environmentally friendly and cheap to run. The mounds provide a self-regulating living environment that responds to changing internal and external conditions. A multidisciplinary team of engineers and entomologists (entomology is the study of insects) is looking at whether similar principles could be used to design buildings that need few or no mechanical services (for example heating and ventilation) and so use less energy and other resources than conventional structures. Loughborough University is leading this innovative project, with funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research...
