A female Temple University student is vowing to return to class despite being unable to chew even the softest of foods after a gang of children smashed her in the face with a brick Friday night. Her 20-year-old boyfriend, who has also declined to be identified, told the station the destructive delinquents likely ranged in age from eight and 14-years-old. ‘I’m walking by and one of the people from the group screamed at me, really loud and really close to my face,’ she recalled. ‘I kept walking because I don’t want to engage them.’

The presentation by Nonie Darwish on “Human Rights under Shariah? For Women and other Minorities” was at Temple University in Philadelphia on April 12, 2011 in Gladfelter Hall. There was a torrential rain outside so the audience may have been small but they were very diverse (age wise and well as politically). Earlier, at Temple, there had been an event in support of sharia. Too bad some of those in attendance didn’t take advantage of this opportunity to hear of Nonie’s life experience under sharia…

The candidate qualifications bill would authorize Arizona's secretary of state to keep a presidential candidate off the state's ballot if the candidate or party doesn't provide required information on the candidate's eligibility. Peter Spiro, a Temple University law professor, said there's an emerging thread in legislation on presidential candidates' qualifications "that somebody who is a dual citizen at birth is ineligible for the presidency." However, Spiro said, "there's no evidence that an individual has to be born to U.S. citizens to be eligible for the presidency."

So today's Philadelphia Inquirer brings us this news: Five Philadelphia police officers were fired yesterday for alleged misconduct, including two incidents in which officers were accused of using racial slurs. Among them was William Thrasher, 24, who allegedly called African Americans in his 22d District "animals" and worse. Thrasher, who had been on the force for two years, was quoted by a Temple University journalism student who was riding with him on patrol for a class assignment. . . . During the ride-along, Thrasher allegedly referred to the violence in his predominantly African American district as "typical n- s-" or...

Victory for Free Speech in DeJohn v. Temple by Kelly Sarabyn August 4, 2008 The Third Circuit Court of Appeals filed an opinion today in DeJohn v. Temple University, et al. The opinion provides an eloquent defense of free speech rights on university campuses and concludes with an unambiguous finding that Temple's speech code is facially unconstitutional. Today's ruling is a great victory for Sergeant Christian DeJohn, the Temple master's student and member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard who brought the challenge to Temple's speech code. Christian's willingness to take a stand for his First Amendment right to free...

PHILADELPHIA, Pa (1010 WINS) -- Steve Wood spent last week living on the streets of Philadelphia. But he's not homeless or even close to it. The Temple University student from Washington Township, N.J. was gathering material for a series of articles he hoped would ``put a face to the homeless.'' Wood, 21, a senior and features editor of the university's school newspaper, Temple News, started his adventure last Saturday. He had stopped shaving days before to help him blend in and talked to a homeless man who is often seen around his school for tips. The university student rode a...

Disapproval of President Bush remains a powerful undertow in Pennsylvania politics, threatening Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate and House, according to a new poll by Temple University and The Inquirer. The Bush effect - strongest in the southeast region - is acting as a drag on Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, and tugs at GOP House incumbents in the suburbs of Philadelphia, who are locked in three of the nation's most competitive races. Democrat Bob Casey Jr., the state treasurer, led Santorum, 49 percent to 39 percent, among the 666 likely voters polled. Three percent of respondents favored Green...

Just over a week ago, Temple University’s Board of Trustees adopted a new policy on academic freedom, one that extended rights to students and not only to professors. The policy, which goes into effect today states in part that students “should be encouraged to develop the capacity for critical judgment and to engage in a sustained and independent search for the truth,” “should be free to take reasoned exception to the information or views offered in any course of study and to reserve judgment about matters of opinion,” and “should have protection through orderly grievance procedures against prejudiced or capricious...

The movement for academic freedom has been spurred on by students who have seen bias in the classroom or experienced political discrimination, stood up against it and become activists for their cause. A handful of these students were in Washington, D.C. to publicly share their stories at the recent Academic Freedom Conference held by Students for Academic Freedom on April 6-7. Student Mason Harrison, of University of California-Davis, encountered a political rant on the first day of a women’s studies class he’d enrolled in on a wager. “My professor began the class, not by introducing herself, but by chanting: ‘No...

John Kerry gave a fire-breathing speech at Temple University in Philadelphia on Friday. In it he announced what will be his themes for the balance of the campaign, subject of course to 180-degree changes at any time. There was one problem with the speech. It was largely “fact-free,” as Dave Barry is wont to say. Here are the claims, and the relevant facts to each claim: “The invasion of Iraq was a profound diversion from the battle against our greatest enemy -- Al Qaeda -- ...” Kerry may not have noticed, but your average college student ought to know that...
