Bush's drag on Santorum helps Casey to 10-point lead (Inquirer/Temple poll)
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 24 September 2006 | Thomas Fitzgerald

Disapproval of President Bush remains a powerful undertow in Pennsylvania politics, threatening Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate and House, according to a new poll by Temple University and The Inquirer.

The Bush effect - strongest in the southeast region - is acting as a drag on Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, and tugs at GOP House incumbents in the suburbs of Philadelphia, who are locked in three of the nation's most competitive races.

Democrat Bob Casey Jr., the state treasurer, led Santorum, 49 percent to 39 percent, among the 666 likely voters polled. Three percent of respondents favored Green Party candidate Carl Romanelli, and 8 percent said they were undecided.

Santorum is holding steady at about an 8-10 point deficit (in reliable polls... I'm not convinced by the IssuesPA poll (Princeton Research) even though Gallup found a similar 18 point deficit for Santorum).

PA Trendlines:
09-24 Temple ....................................... Casey +10
09-20 Rasmussen .................................. Casey +10
09-19 Greenberg Quinlan Rosner (D) .... Casey +14
09-18 Princeton Research Associates .... Casey +21
09-18 Franklin and Marshall College ..... Casey +7

Scam poll. The number of polled is 666 and coincides with Chavez calling Bush the devil and the title linking Santorum to Bush.

The poll's results are based on telephone interviews with 666 registered voters statewide who said they were likely or certain to go to the polls Nov. 7. Interviews were conducted for seven days, ending Wednesday. The margin of error for sample as a whole is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

which is it,likely or registered?

"....among the 666 likely voters polled...."

Well, of course if you're only going to poll "the 666 likely voters", you're going to get a big Dem edge!

I really do not know just who is being polled. Anyone with two brain cells would not vote for bobby casey. The man does not have a clue.

If Casey really has that big a lead, you have to wonder why his campaign is wasting money running harsh negative ads against Santorum in Philadelphia -- ads that do almost nothing but say that Santorum supports Bush. Philadelphia voted 80-20 for John Kerry. So why waste your money there, on negative ads?

Penna is a Red State with 2 large blue cities. Just look at the 2000 & 2004 county voting maps.

If the GOPers turn out, Santorum wins by a nice majority and will surprise the demokkkRATs. Casey's a zero; an empty suit. His daddy wasn't much better.

Well, you have to give his father credit for sticking by his principles and getting himself kicked out of the party for being pro-life.

Just about every other Democrat pro-life politician has caved in under pressure from the pro-abortion fanatics.

But on this issue I don't trust Casey Junior. There's nothing to recommend him but being the son of his father.

Casey wasn't kicked out of the party. He was denied the opportunity to speak at their convention. He remained, until his dying day, a loyal liberal Democrat who happened to be pro-life. Like father, like son.

Well does Casey stand on the gun issue? Santorum might need to remind people what life was like for the typical NRA supporter when the DEMS held power. If I remember right there is a strong element of 2nd amendment supporters in Penn.

His pro-life stand was commendable, but he was a hard-core liberal, and did nothing for Penna, except continue the corruption.

To ensure turnout. Since the Governor's race is a sleeper, Philly turnout isn't guaranteed. Any Democrat needs strong Philly turnout in order to win Pennsylvania. Santorum is loathed in Philly and the ads are probably just keeping Santorum's name visible to make sure that people will come out just to vote him out.

---"Santorum is holding steady at about an 8-10 point deficit"---

And he can't seem to stay consistently over 40% in any poll. Fourty-something days left and his full advertising blitz has basically just brought the race down to 8-10 points.

It stinks, but I think the likelihood of losing my favorite U.S. Senator is very high right now. I hope there's still a miracle left.......

Santorum has got to get Casey to debate him on television one or two more times. Every time Casey opens his mouth, he shows what an imbecile he is and Santorum poll numbers shoot up.

Oh I agree completely. If Casey debated Santorum say three more times Santorum could definitely beat him

Just saw another GREAT Santorum TV ad. I live in Pittsburgh. Santorum's from the burbs here. It had Rudy talking. It looked like a movie. Slick, artful, meaningful. Plenty of firemen around, Rudy was speaking about Rick's support of the WoT. WONDERFUL ad. He has some great ads, IMO. I can't remember if I've seen any Casey ones. Casey will surely win the City of Pittsburgh, but our TV viewing area is into some rural/suburban/conservative areas. Sen Santorum PLAY RUDY AD often!
