A popular Chinese beverage chain has apologised for using sexist slogans on its merchandise, after they sparked widespread outrage online. Sexy Tea shop had referred to women as a "bargain" on one of its mugs, adding that customers could pick up women while waiting for their drinks. The shop had in the past also sold tea bags with the slogan "Master, I want you" along with images of tadpoles. The shop later said it had no intention of "disrespecting women". It added that it would recall its latest range of mugs and was "very ashamed" of its latest creation.

TWO cups of oolong tea a day can help you lose fat while you sleep, research suggests. Scientists found the tea boosts your metabolism while you kip — which keeps your body burning off calories. Like all tea, oolong contains caffeine which has been shown to boost fat breakdown by about 20 per cent. But experts discovered caffeine-only drinks stop working when you drift off — while the special tea continues to encourage your metabolism to keep going during sleep. Prof Tokuyama, of Tsukuba University, Japan, who did the study, said: “The stimulatory effects of oolong tea on fat breakdown...

Would you try this cheesy drink?Tea and cheese are the latest trending ingredients for San Francisco’s newest Instagram worthy food item. STEAP Tea Bar, in San Francisco’s Chinatown, is now making a popular Asian drink known as cheese tea. “It’s a horrible name, but it’s not cheddar cheese or Velveeta on top of tea, it’s more of a whipped tea top,” said the owner of STEAP Tea Bar, Emil de Francesco, in an interview with SF Gate. The drink is iced black or green tea with a “cheese cream” topping made from mascarpone cheese. Judge: Ending Program to Protect Immigrants...
  • Judge bars Starbucks from closing 77 failing Teavana stores

An Indiana judge has taken an unusual step and temporarily barred Starbucks from closing 77 failing Teavana stores in Simon Property Group malls because the real estate giant was less able to handle the financial pain. Starbucks said in July it planned to shutter its 379-store Teavana operation — but Simon rushed to court to block 77 stores in its malls from going dark — claiming such a move by a high-profile tenant could spark other stores in its malls to close. Starbucks, after trying to turn around its stumbling tea chain, said last August it was pulling the plug...

The "cheese" is really more of a salty whipped topping, and it's greatI tried cheese tea and I hate to disappoint you, but it's not that weird. The drink, which originated in Taiwan, consists of a form of whipped cream cheese and salt added to hot and cold teas. The beverage has made its way to select cafes around the United States while becoming controversial, with social media commenters suggesting that the combination must be gross. To many, "cheese" and "tea" sound like a queasy combination—think covering your Earl Grey with a slice of mozzarella—and that was the overriding feeling...

  • Republicans are predicting the beginning of the end of the tea party in Kansas

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas was at the heart of the tea party revolution, a red state where, six years ago, a deeply conservative group of Republicans took the state for a hard right turn. Now, after their policies failed to produce the results GOP politicians promised, the state has become host to another revolution: a resurgence of moderate Republicans. Moderate Republicans joined with Democrats this week to raise state taxes, overriding GOP Gov. Sam Brownback’s veto and repudiating the conservative governor’s platform of ongoing tax cuts. The vote was a demonstration of the moderates’ newfound clout in the state...

California’s new universal health care passed the Senate in a Thursday vote, and drew criticism from the unlikeliest of places: Democrats. One in particular dropped this bomb, “We are not debating single payer today because we are not debating a funding source.” Democratic Sen. Ben Hueso told the Sacramento Bee. “We are not debating delivery of service. We are not debating where the health savings will come from. None of that is in the bill. This is the Senate kicking the can down the road to the Assembly and asking the Assembly to fill in all the rest of the blanks.” Hueso’s...

Health officials warned the public Friday to throw away any herbal tea purchased from a Chinatown shop, after two people became critically ill after consuming the tea which was found to contained Aconite, a lethal poison. In separate incidents from February and March, a woman in her 50s and a man in his 30s became gravely ill within an hour of drinking tea made from leaves supplied by the same San Francisco herbalist. The tea leaves were purchased at the Sun Wing Wo Trading Company, located at 1105 Grant Ave. in Chinatown in San Francisco. Each person quickly became weak,...

People who drink very hot beverages may increase their risk of developing cancer, a new investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO) has found. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of WHO, said last week that it classifies very hot beverages as "probably carcinogenic to humans." ... Specifically, drinking beverages at or above 149 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius) can cause cancer to develop in the esophagus, the IARC researchers wrote in their article, published June 15 in the journal The Lancet Oncology. "Clearly, more research will need to happen in the coming years to...
