We all know the top "rated" talk shows but do the ratings reflect your preferences? Are the highest rated necessarily the most talented? (video)

There are dozens of radio talk-show hosts broadcasting this week from Washington, D.C., as part of a rally that aims to pressure Congress to defeat an illegal alien amnesty bill, protect the border, and support the U.S. Border Patrol. The set of Glenn Beck's talk show on CNN Headline News looks like the rooftop patio of a posh apartment, complete with simulated bricks and a huge photo-realist mural of a SoHo block. Beck is standing in the middle of this fake aerie, riffing about porn. He avoids X-rated movies and magazines, he says, but won't offer the righteous condemnations you'd expect from the God-fearing conservative that he constantly reminds viewers he is. Porn isn't for him -- but neither is legislating morality.

Is conservative talk radio in trouble? Have listeners become bored with their once-favorite personalities? Be careful what you believe: While there are some dark clouds on the horizon, the conservative format is still strong, despite limited audience erosion. Here's where the contention began: Last week, Arbitron radio ratings revealed that outside of a few cities, the much-touted liberal talk stations are not finding much of an audience.

Since I retired several months ago, I've had plenty of time to listen to talk radio and I've been able to come up with my own factors for rating some of the hosts. It is this: Who provides depth and insight and who doesn't?
