In an interview with Syrian newspaper Al Watan this morning, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stressed that “Israel alone” is Syria’s enemy. “He who conquers our land is an enemy country, not [merely] a country whose leaders employ hostile policies. Israel alone remains our enemy country.” “Our land” is apparently a reference to the Land of Israel itself, and not Syria, which Arab news outlets reported yesterday the Israeli Air Force had bombed. …

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's statement that his forces in Syria were there to topple President Bashar al-Assad had come as a surprise to Moscow and that it expected an explanation from Ankara. In a speech on Tuesday, Erdogan said: "We are there to bring justice. We are there to end the rule of the cruel Assad, who has been spreading state terror," Erdogan said. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call: "It is a very serious statement and one which differs from previous ones [...] We hope that our Turkish partners...

Thursday, October 27, 2016 It's a Mad, Mad War Posted by Daniel Greenfield Russia and the West are fighting to decide whether Syria will be run by Sunni Islamists backed by Saudi Arabia or Shiite Islamists backed by Iran. This insane civil war has burned up countless lives, not to mention plenty of dollars, rubles, euros and pounds. The only certain winners of this war, once the dust has settled, will chant “Allahu Akbar” and call for the death of the infidels. Sadly this is nothing new. Russia got the PLO started before Bill Clinton decided to become its sugar...

Mr Putin has sent Russia's only aircraft carrier alongside an arsenal of heavily armed ships including a battlecruiser and two destroyers. The fleet, which is making its way into British waters, is carrying fighter bombers that are likely to reinforce a final assault on the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo in two weeks. A senior NATO diplomat said: "They are deploying all of the Northern fleet and much of the Baltic fleet in the largest surface deployment since the end of the Cold War. "This is not a friendly port call. In two weeks, we will see a crescendo of...

an interview with the Bild newspaper on Oct. 8, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is known for his cautious rhetoric, described the present international situation in the following woeful terms: “unfortunately it is an illusion to believe this is the old Cold War. The new times are different; they are more dangerous. Previously, the world was divided, but Moscow and Washington knew each other’s red lines and respected them. In a world with many regional conflicts and dwindling influence of the great powers, the world becomes more unpredictable.” For these reasons, said Steinmeier, “The USA and Russia must continue...

Secretary of State John Kerry accused Russia and Syrian dictator Bashar Assad of committing war crimes in their assault on rebel-held territory, including hospitals and aid workers, and called for an investigation. "Russia and the regime owe the world more than an explanation about why they keep hitting hospitals, medical facilities, children and women," Kerry said before a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault. "These are acts that beg for an appropriate investigation of war crimes and those that commit these would and should be held accountable for these actions. They're beyond the accidental now, way beyond, years beyond...

U.S. President Barack Obama and his top foreign policy advisers are expected to meet on Friday to consider their military and other options in Syria as Syrian and Russian aircraft continue to pummel Aleppo and other targets, U.S. officials said. Some top officials argue the United States must act more forcefully in Syria or risk losing what influence it still has over moderate rebels and its Arab, Kurdish and Turkish allies in the fight against Islamic State, the officials told Reuters. One set of options includes direct U.S. military action such as air strikes on Syrian military bases, munitions depots...

** The number of Christian community in Iraq is a tenth of what it was, falling to 150,000Moscow, October 7, Interfax - The fate of Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East is a source of concern for Moscow. "Historically, Russia has helped and supported fraternal Christians that were harassed and discriminated against and defended their rights and interests, with arms in hand, if need be. Therefore, we are naturally worried about the future of the 2,000-year Christian presence in the Middle East. According to some human rights organisations, in the past seven years the number...

Could psycho elites start WWIII? What’s going on here, in Syria? It all seems to be maybe heavily screened and minimized by the Google Machine, but as far as I can see, Vladimir Putin’s Russia is “assisting” the President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, as he battles “rebels” who are trying to take him down and out and probably kill him.

Russia has confirmed it has sent an S-300 air defence missile system to its naval base in Syria's port of Tartus. Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the purpose of the system was to guarantee the security of the base from the air. The move comes amid growing tension with the West. On Monday, the US halted talks with Russia on trying to co-ordinate air strikes against jihadists.

One of the mortar shells fired at the embassy complex hit the residential area, while two others landed near the embassy building, the ministry said in a statement. Nobody was injured by the explosions. “According to reports, the shelling came from the Jobar neighborhood of Damascus, which is under control of the terrorist groups Jabhat Fateh al-Sham and Failak ar-Rahman,” the ministry said. Jabhat Fateh al-Sham is the new name taken by Al-Nusra Front, the Al-Qaeda offshoot universally considered a terrorist organization. Failak ar-Rahman is a lesser-known Islamist group. Moscow said the shelling is “result of the actions of those...

The Syrian army told rebels to leave the area, offering safe passage and aid supplies. The Syrian military, supported by Iranian-backed militias and Russian air power, began their push to take the whole of the divided city after a ceasefire collapsed last month. The assault has nearly destroyed eastern Aleppo's healthcare system, the U.N said. An air campaign by the Syrian government and its allies was reinforced by a ground offensive targeting...
