Moscow, October 7, Interfax - The fate of Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East is a source of concern for Moscow.
"Historically, Russia has helped and supported fraternal Christians that were harassed and discriminated against and defended their rights and interests, with arms in hand, if need be. Therefore, we are naturally worried about the future of the 2,000-year Christian presence in the Middle East. According to some human rights organisations, in the past seven years the number of physical attacks and terrorist attacks on Christians in Africa, Asia and the Middle East grew by 309 percent," Russian Foreign Ministry Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law Konstantin Dolgov said.
He spoke on Thursday at the International practical conference Religions against Terrorism, the Foreign Ministry press service reports.
According to Dolgov, "followers of Christianity and other religions considered "heretics" by terrorists are subjected to harassment."
"Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria its Christian population decreased from 2.2 million to 1.2 million. Militants target Christian shrines and take Christians hostage. The position of the Christian community in Iraq remains no less difficult. Its population is a tenth of what it was in 2003, falling from 1.5 million to 150,000," the Russian diplomat cited the statistics.
According to human rights activists, Dolgov said, systematic manifestations of Christianophobia were registered in 139 countries and Islamophobia in 121 countries.
"Despite measures taken by OSCE member states, there has been a significant rise in intolerance of Jews, Muslims and particularly Christians on their territory. Christianity, its shrines and followers are subjected to harassment, violence and discrimination," the Foreign Ministry official said.
I won’t fight against people standing up for Christians, here or abroad.

Odd that it is the Russians who are actively working to protect Christian interests in the Middle East.
I know, them and Trump are the only ones that are flat out saying defend Christianity. What on earth happened that flipped Russia and USA in just 25 yrs! But yeah genocide against Christians is about right.
Not odd in the least. Historically this is Russia’s traditional role in the middle East. Sovietism was an anamoly. Russia’s now back to doing what she’s always done.
This would explain Obama and Hillary's "blunders" with Libya and Egypt.
It would explain why Hillary lied about a video causing the 9/11/2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. ambassador to Libya: She wanted to publicize this video, produced by a Coptic (i.e., Egyptian) Christian, with the intention of inciting anti-Christian attacks against Coptic Christians.
Remember when the MSM used to report when Muslims attacked Coptic Christians in Egypt? They always called the attacks "clashes." The MSM stopped reporting on these attacks around the time the "Arab Spring" came into being. Does anyone believe that there were fewer attacks on Christians in North Africa after the "Arab Spring" rose to power?
That’s a good thing. I have read here & there authors who assert that Putin has had something of a religious conversion since coming to power. There’s no telling if that is true but if it is then much is explained in the current situation.
