A Swedish priest has been fired after telling his congregation that people who support female priests would be rejected by God - despite the fact that his own church is led by a woman. The Church of Sweden priest in Halland, south-western Sweden, was defrocked after a sermon in which he claimed that Christian salvation was only available to people who rejected the ordination of women. The priest made the controversial comments after finding out that a reorganisation of the church in his area meant that he would soon be working with two female pastors. “The very idea that a...

Sweden's Social Democrats and their centre-left allies are poised to return to power after defeating the centre-right government, in a general election that also resulted in strong gains for the anti-immigration party. With all but two voting districts tallied on Sunday, the Social Democrat-led bloc won 43.8 percent of the vote while the ruling centre-right coalition, led by the Moderate Party, gained 39.3 percent. But the anti-immigration far-right Sweden Democrats were celebrating large gains as the party won 12.9 percent of votes cast - more than doubling the 5.7 percent of votes won in the 2010 election. "Sweden friends, party...

Sweden has emerged from a bitter submarine technology row with Germany to mount a last-ditch effort to outbid Japan and Germany for the contract to build AustraliaÂ’s new submarines. The chief executive of Swedish defence giant Saab, Hakan Bushke, weighed into a heated Australian political row after Prime Minister Tony Abbott all but broke an election promise to assemble AustraliaÂ’s new submarines in Adelaide. Mr AbbottÂ’s insistence the decision will be based on value for money and regional policy rather than jobs in Adelaide suggests 10 submarines will be built in Japan for about $20 billion, though the government has...

Finland and Sweden plan to work more closely with Nato by signing a pact that allows assistance from alliance troops in the Nordic countries in emergency situations, officials said on Wednesday. The move comes as Nato prepares for a summit next week in Wales amid heightened tensions with Russia over the crisis in Ukraine. Finland shares a 1,300km (800-mile) border with Russia. The Finnish government said the host nation support agreement applies to situations which include "disasters, disruptions and threats to security". It also enables joint training exercises and military cooperation. Finnish defence ministry senior adviser Mika Varvikko said Finland...

August 23, 2014 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - In 1200 A.D., a Swedish man named Frederik Ugarph found a hard wood statue only about six inches (15 cm) high of a little person wearing a conical hat in what is now Trondheim, Norway. The statue was standing on a pedestal engraved with the words: “NISSE Riktig Storrelse.” That means, “Gnome, actual height.” Owned and housed today by the Oliv family in Uppsala, Norway, X-ray tests indicate the wooden statue is more than 2,000 years old, perhaps carved from a tree that is no longer known. Another historic account of a “miniature person”...

Johan and Alejandra are the kind of Swedes the IMF has been warning about - piling up debt to keep up with an ever-rising property market and fund a lifestyle of travel, maids and nights out. The couple plan to buy a flat in Stockholm for 5 to 6 million Swedish crowns ($724,000 to $869,000), initially with an interest-only bank loan, among other spending plans. "I may travel, I may want to invest in a new business," said Alejandra, who runs a cafe in the city centre. Less than a month away from a general election, there are no votes...

In 2020, tiny Sweden will dispose of the most lethal weapon ever developed by man; The A26 stealth sub that could go anywhere and destroy whatever it wants without any adversary standing a chance of detecting it.. "The U.S. military is relying on sub-hunting tech that’s decades old. Meanwhile, the targets they’re trying to find are getting quieter and more invisible by the day. Submarines are getting quieter, stealthier, and better armed. And that could mean major trouble for the U.S. Navy and its aging fleet of sub-hunters. The tactical balance between the surface warship and the submarine has strategic...

The world's oldest European eel just died in its home, a well in a southern Swedish fishing town, aged 155. Some people have ghosts in their attics. Tomas Kjellman, resident in the little fishing town of Brantevik in Skåne, has always had an eel in his well. "My family bought the cottage in 1962, and we always knew the housepet was included," Kjellman told The Local. Its presence has been well-documented for more than a century. But no more. "Of course it's sad. I have memories of the eel from when I was a child," Kjellman said. The eel featured in...

Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson kept to familiar themes in his summer speech on Saturday, focusing on Islam, immigration and crime. Swedish party leaders traditionally hold summer speeches on their home turf during the holiday season and Saturday was the turn of the Sweden Democrats' Jimmie Åkesson. A crowd of a few hundred people had gathered in Åkesson's home town of Sölvesborg in Sweden's far south to hear the 35-year-old launch the party's push towards the general election in September. Following a sweeping review of the current global conflict zones, Åkesson shifted focus to Islam. "Islamism is the Nazism and...
