  • Ice cream names cause debate - are the names racist or Nazi codewords?

    11/12/2013 6:49:25 AM PST · by marthemaria · 53 replies
GB Glace launched a new flavor of a classic ice-cream the other week, and were promptly accused of racism. The ice-creams unfortunate name is "Nogger Black" as it is a liquorice flavored version of the classic nougat-flavored "Nogger". A couple of years ago they made a liquorice version of the 88. It had a crunchy outside, liquorice and vanilla inside and was really quite good. However, it failed to become popular and was discontinued. This year GB decided to try their luck with a liquorice version of another classic ice-cream, the nougat covered vanilla and then soft nougat center ice-cream...

A Swedish teenager has filed a complaint against a paint producer that labeled the color beige as "skin color." Thyra,14, whose last name wasn't reported, said she discovered the paint sold by Universal Color and Chemicals at school, TheLocal.se reported. "By renaming beige to skin color they show that there is a whiteness norm in society," Thyra told the Aftonbladet newspaper. "It is completely sick that they just rename beige to skin color when black and brown are also that," she added. Thyra has taken her complaint to the Equality Ombudsman on the basis that the term "skin color" is...

Saudi Arabia has invested in Pakistani nuclear weapons projects, and believes it could obtain atomic bombs at will, a variety of sources have told BBC Newsnight. ... Earlier this year, a senior Nato decision maker told me that he had seen intelligence reporting that nuclear weapons made in Pakistan on behalf of Saudi Arabia are now sitting ready for delivery. Last month Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israeli military intelligence, told a conference in Sweden that if Iran got the bomb, "the Saudis will not wait one month. They already paid for the bomb, they will go to Pakistan...

The Church of Sweden has elected its first woman archbishop. On 15 October 2013 the Rt. Rev. Antje Jackelén, Bishop of Lund, was elected Archbishop of Uppsala and primate of the Church of Sweden. She also objected to making belief in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ a benchmark of the Christian faith. “It is strange that the question of the virgin birth has become something of a faith test,” she told Kyrkans Tidning, adding the Bible had been interpreted in different ways across time and cultures and that many different cultures had made use of a virgin birth as...

Anti-Semitism and Malmö are words that frequently appear together. Jews are turning their back on the southern city in the wake of several incidents while potential Jewish tourists have expressed concern over the city's safety. The Local's Patrick Reilly donned a kippah for a day to find out what the situation is really like. Last month The Local received an email from a Jewish reader in America who is contemplating a visit to Sweden. "With the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, and some very scary stuff in Sweden (Malmö comes to mind), why should a Jewish guy visit Sweden with...

A motion to ban the circumcision of males younger than 18, unless for medical purposes, has been presented to the Swedish parliament. Two members of the right-wing, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats party brought the motion forward on Tuesday. Their party, which holds only 20 of the 349 seats in parliament, argues it is the next step after Sweden’s ban on female genital mutilation. …

The Criminal Court on Wednesday sent Lebanese-Swedish man Atris Hussein, believed to be linked to the Hezbollah militant group, to prison for two years and eight months after finding him guilty on charges of illegally possessing restricted chemical substances.Hussein was arraigned in the Criminal Court on Feb 29 last year for violating the weapons control law after police seized nearly 2.8 tonnes of ammonium nitrate and urea-based fertiliser from houses he rented in Samut Sakhon on Jan 16, 2012. The chemicals, which are widely used in the agricultural sector, can be used to make bombs. The court initially sentenced him...
  • 'It's Fun to Pretend That Sweden Actually Matters'

    09/13/2013 2:56:51 PM PDT · by nickcarraway · 5 replies
With US President Barack Obama in the Swedish capital for two days, we asked Stockholmers to sound off about the visit, the president himself, and how Stockholm is handling the circus in general. While one Stockholm resident we asked thought it was "fun to pretend that Sweden actually matters" during the presidential visit, questions about Obama drew a variety of responses when The Local hit the streets with a camera. Some protesters chimed in with their own thoughts about the POTUS, and others were quick to take a chance to complain about the delays to traffic and Stockholm life in...

Saab seeks collaboration with Boeing to sell Gripen fighter jets to U.S. Swedish arms manufacturer Saab is said to be close to a cooperation with American airplane maker Boeing to offer JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets to the U.S. Air Force's educational TX. The collaboration is expected to be announced within "weeks rather than months", according to US air industry magazine Aviation Week, citing informed sources. Saab is apparently confident that the two companies will be able to undercut the cost of the closest rival contender, the Lockheed Martin/Korea Aerospace Industries T-50, it said. The news came the same day...

Another week, another jaw-dropping development in Sweden. A couple of weeks ago it was the cockamamie “hijab solidarity” campaign, in which non-Muslim women all over the country donned head coverings in tribute to a Muslim woman who claimed a man had yanked hers off. This week, the eyebrow-raising news is that Sweden is offering instant permanent residency to any and all Syrian refugees who apply. These newly minted residents, moreover, will be entitled to bring over their spouses and kids. The reasoning behind this new policy is that the situation in Syria is extremely dangerous right now and not likely...

Unfortunately, as we saw during his Stockholm stopover, the president lives in the press’s energy bubble. President Obama swung through Sweden Wednesday on his way to Russia and couldn’t miss the chance to comment on what a wonderful job the Swedes are doing in creating a clean energy world: Sweden is obviously an extraordinary leader when it comes to tackling climate change and increasing energy efficiency, and developing new technologies. And the goal of achieving a carbon-neutral economy is remarkable, and Sweden is well on its way. We deeply respect and admire that and think we can learn from it....
