If Duncan Hunter is a long-shot for the Republican nomination for president in 2008, he's not admitting it. Buoyed by a third-place finish -- and statistical tie for first place -- in a Spartanburg County straw poll over the weekend, Hunter brought his conservative message to about 80 people at the 1st Monday Republican Lunch Group at Aunt Chiladas Restaurant on Hilton Head Island. The California congressman outlined a platform that includes ripping up current trade policies with China, building a double wall along the Mexican border and a steadfast resolve to keep nuclear weapons out of Iranian hands. Hunter's...

Every 4 years, to garner the nomination for their party, GOPers swerve right, and Dems swerve left, to placate their respective bases, who tend more conservative/liberal than the population at large. Makes sense, since it is usually true believers most involved in the grassroots political process. This has repeated itself for many, many election cycles. Those that blur the lines between republican and democrat, are treated with suspicion by their bases. It could be a single issue, for example Joe Lieberman on the war, or a host of issues, such as Arnold in California. Their resultant election to office, driven...

'America's mayor' in strong position for '08 With the 2008 race off to a fast start, there have already been some big surprises (Obama, anyone?). But the biggest shocker so far has to be how strong "America's mayor" is running in the polls. The most recent poll has Giuliani leading the Republican field by five points (with 31 percent to John McCain's 26 percent, according to Real Clear Politics). True, it's early. But the numbers do reflect a deep reservoir of support among some GOP primary voters. Giuliani has a few things going in his favor. For starters, he has...

More voters say they would be comfortable with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as president than other top 2008 contenders, though majorities would also be comfortable with other leaders from both parties, according to the latest FOX News Poll. In addition, of all the 2008 hopefuls — announced or frequently mentioned as a possibility — voters want to hear more from one candidate specifically: Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. Opinion Dynamics Corporation conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from January 30 to January 31. The poll has a 3-point error margin.

Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue BY CRAIG GORDON Newsday Washington Bureau January 28, 2007 MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid. [...snip] Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy,...

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter plans to make his Republican presidential bid official at a Spartanburg, S.C. breakfast meeting Thursday. The 14-term conservative from California set up his presidential exploratory committee last week. Hunter has made no secret of his White House aspirations. He announced his intentions in October, becoming the first GOP candidate to declare a presidential run, and then began making stops in early primary states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. He is scheduled to return to New Hampshire on Monday to repeat his announcement. Little known outside of Congress and his San Diego district, Hunter can...

Former New York City mayor and potential presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani began an hour-and-a-half-long speech in Sarasota on Tuesday by poking fun at the organization founded to help maintain international law. Giuliani told the nearly 1,700 audience members, some of whom paid up to $600 to hear him speak as part of this year's Ringling School Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series, a story about his first months as mayor. He had taken to calling New York "the capital of the world" as he worked his constituency. This, he said, generated letters from other mayors around the country wondering who...

A Vote for Rudy Why Giuliani should be president RICHARD BROOKHISER I have voted against Rudy Giuliani, and I have voted for him. Voting for him is better; it’s what I hope conservatives, Republicans, and Americans will do in 2008. Giuliani formed a presidential exploratory committee after the midterm elections, formally entering campaign land, in which every utterance by and about him will be analyzed and its potential effect polled. Not that it hasn’t been going on for years. My favorite of the early reax to Rudy was flagged by columnist Deroy Murdock: An anti-Giuliani website, SayNoToRudy.org, posted by social...

.......On Nov. 15, Mr. Giuliani met in Manhattan with supporters who could form the core of a national fund-raising effort, including Thomas O. Hicks, the owner of the Texas Rangers; Mel M. Immergut, the chairman of the New York law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy; and William E. Simon Jr., an investor who ran for governor of California in 2002. Mr. Giuliani crisscrossed the country this year, visiting 25 states to campaign with or raise money for Republican candidates, according to his political action committee, Solutions America. But political analysts say his liberal views on social issues like abortion...

Colorado Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo's new book, "In Mortal Danger: The Battle For America's Borders and Security," should be required reading for every high-school student, public official, elected representative, judge and presidential candidate, as well as every citizen and prospective citizen in America. It is that important. It is that valuable. And were its contents widely digested, I have no doubt it would radically alter the political, cultural and social landscape of our country. That a politician has written a book is nothing new. That Tom Tancredo has something important to say about the direction of our country, our future,...

Do you think TV comedy writer and talk radio host Al Franken is a credible candidate for U.S. senator in Minnesota?

At this time in the 2000 primary season, George W. Bush vanquished his rival Sen. John McCain. Four years later, the tables have turned, and six Democrat presidential candidates are struggling to slow Sen. John Kerry's massive momentum. While talk of a Kerry-John Edwards ticket is widespread, few people are considering who should be President's Bush running mate. On January 27, however, MSNBC.com columnist Jeannette Walls broke the silence, reporting that President Bush would replace Vice President Dick Cheney and that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was the frontrunner. A White House source then quelled at least part...
