President Donald Trump has chosen a "career member" of the Secret Service to be its new director starting in May, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders announced Monday afternoon. Sanders' announcement of the selection of James Murray followed the news that Trump was removing the current director of the Secret Service, Randolph "Tex" Alles, amid a shakeup at the Department of Homeland Security. In her statement announcing the move, Sanders described Murray as "a career member" of the US Secret Service.

Secret Service Director Randolph Alles is leaving his position, according to several reports on Monday. The move comes after a series of leadership changes in the security branch of the Trump administration, including the resignation of Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen and the decision to withdraw Ronald Vitiello as his nominee for director of ICE. The decision to force out Alles comes just days after a woman was arrested at the president’s Mar-a-Lago club with Chinese passports and computer and cell phone malware after she made it past a checkpoint.

NBC News’ Kristen Welker reported via Twitter Friday afternoon that “Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan will announce his resignation today according to multiple sources.” Sullivan has overseen the Secret Service since 2006 and was its director during the agency’s high-profile prostitution scandal last year. 12 Secret Service agents and several other military personnel were allegedly involved with prostitutes in Cartagena, Colombia in April 2012. Those agents were sent there to set up advance security ahead of a visit by President Obama.
