Russia did not in fact win their first gold medal in men’s hockey in 26 years with a heart-stopping 4-3 overtime win over Germany on Sunday afternoon. Instead a team competing neutrally as Olympic Athletes from Russia, the IOC’s inspired nomenclatural workaround to incorporate Russians at the Pyeongchang Games despite a wholesale doping ban, held off a stingy German team in the game of the tournament to capture Olympic men’s hockey gold, the first for a Russian-affiliated team since Albertville 1992. Kirill Kaprizov’s one-time winner from the right circle on a power play in overtime followed a white-knuckle finish to...

ESPN recently re-aired a three-part documentary about the long rivalry between two storied NBA basketball teams, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, and their two marquee players, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, respectively. After another devastating Laker loss, this time in the 1984 finals, Laker star Magic Johnson said he felt so disappointed, in part, because he let down blacks. So many black fans were pulling for him, including, he discovered, many black residents of Boston. As a Los Angeles native, I, too, wanted the Lakers to win. But how did the Lakers of the era become the...

Speaking at the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards in London on Monday, British Horseracing Authority (BHA) chief Nick Rust said the sport needs to question whether it has a problem with “unconscious bias”. The betting industry bigwig slammed figures which showed that nine in 10 of the 265 nominations received for the awards, which mark the contributions of around 6,000 people who work in Britain’s horse racing and breeding industries, were from a white British or Irish background. “We need to look at what lies behind this and ensure far better representation across the various minority groups in future...

University of Miami basketball coach Jim Larranaga took the opportunity after Saturday's 62-55 loss to Syracuse to let the world know his views on gun control in the wake of the Stoneman Douglas High massacre. "I think we have to do something about our gun laws," Larranaga said. "We're not the Wild, Wild West where everybody should carry a gun. There needs to be accountability and responsibility for people in charge of selling guns and buying guns."

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham sparked nationwide controversy this week after telling Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James and Golden State Warriors role player Kevin Durant to avoid discussing politics and to “shut up and dribble.” Liberals decried the supposedly racist undertones of her comments, but last night the host of The Ingraham Angle refused to to apologize for her remarks saying, “the left and the media attack dogs can dish it out can’t they, but they sure can’t take it.”On Thursday night, Ingraham aired a video featuring the aforementioned NBA stars and an ESPN host discussing politics and the state of...

Sally Field has no qualms about being her son’s personal matchmaker — and has her sights set on this year’s most popular Olympic figure skater, Adam Rippon! On Friday, February 16, Sam Greisman, the Mrs. Doubtfire actress’ 30-year-old son, shared a screenshot of their conversation in which they were talking about Team USA’s Rippon. “Sam… he’s insanely pretty. Find a way..” she advised during their chat. Alongside the tweet, Greisman wrote, “Just some really helpful advice from my mom on how to deal with my Olympic crush.

A reporter last night asked San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich why it’s important for the NBA to celebrate Black History Month. Popovich isn’t one to pull any punches: ‘I think it’s pretty obvious. The league is made up of a lot of black guys. To honor that and understand it is pretty simplistic. How would you ignore that? But more importantly, we live in a racist country that hasn’t figured it out yet.’

Women’s snowboard halfpipe first runs The Winter Olympics continued on Monday and the biggest thing to watch is the women’s snowboarding halfpipe competition. American Chloe Kim, at 17 years old, is the one to watch, and in her very first run, she put down an incredibly dominant score of 93.75, well ahead of the rest of the field. Her run included a signature inverted 540, she nailed a nice indy grap on her final rotation and finished her run with a 720. She was last to go in the first runs, and she easily took first place. Liu Jiayu of...

Retired NBA star Kobe Bryant during an interview with outspoken ESPN anchor Jemele Hill weighed in on the Colin Kaepernick protest debate by saying that if he were still playing today he would have joined in on it despite the potential backlash. Bryant said that Kaepernick’s message was a “very simple one” and that people are as entitled to protest peacefully as they are to be upset about those protests. “Yeah, I would have participated in it, for sure. I’m sure I would have gotten some flak for it. That’s fine,” he told Hill. “I think that Colin’s message was...

You have placed your country above a stupid game. Isn't it great a number of Freepers here put their money where their mouths are and when they say they boycott the NFL..they actually do. Unlike some..well, never mind ;)

A growing number of Americans have decided they have better things to do with their time on Super Bowl Sunday than support a professional football league that doesn't have the decency to honor the national anthem.American Legion and VFW posts, restaurants and bars, and even a bowling alley have decided they will not broadcast the Super Bowl game in their establishments -- out of respect for veterans and law enforcement.A giant electronic sign outside the Oneota Veterans Club in New York reads, “In honor of our country, our flag, our veterans."The Knights of Columbus chapter in Longview, Texas decided to...

Everything you need to know about the Super Bowl can be found in the rap hit “Dreams and Nightmares,” by Meek Mill. But which more truthfully could be named after a line in the song: "The Murder Game" or "All I Know Is Murder." Everything about how far professional football has fallen and how the NFL celebrates the obscene, the vulgar, the dangerous, and the foolish will be on full display as that song blares as the Eagles take the field. This song that the Eagle players have chosen is about guns, drugs, money, bitches, and murder, over and over...

NFL legend Herschel Walker is defending President Trump, denying he is a racist and urging Americans to show the U.S. head of state the respect his office deserves.... “He is a great man and it’s sad to see people that do not know him say the awful things they’ve said about him, that he’s racist. I’m here to tell you Donald Trump is not a racist.”

I love pro-football. From the plains of Iowa, I became a Cowboys fan. Most of my friends like the Packers, Bears, Vikings, or Chiefs, but not me. I loved those Dallas Cowboys. Why? First, Iowa doesn’t have a professional football team and secondly in the late 70s the Cowboys were awesome. The days of Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett gave way to Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith. As a boy those guys were larger than life…real life sports heroes. I suffered through two-a-days as a seventh grader because football was the greatest game I’d ever seen. I wasn’t too fast and...

A couple weeks ago, we learned that the NFL is increasingly unpopular amongst older viewers. Fast-forward a couple weeks, and we learn that younger viewers don’t particularly care for the league either. The Public Religion Research Institute recently released the findings of a poll which analyzed fan interest in football across different age groups. The results of that poll, will not sit well with the NFL.

Tuesday on ESPN Radio’s “Golic and Wingo,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised his league’s players for the social issues they addressed, saying he and ownership are “proud” of their work.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is kneeling in support of the league’s decision not to run an American Veterans ad during the Super Bowl. American Veterans, or AMVETS, was hoping to run an ad during Super Bowl LII on Sunday with a simple message: "Please Stand." The ad, which is obviously expressing opposition to the national anthem protest that has plagued the NFL for two seasons, was rejected by the NFL and will not appear in the programming. "The Super Bowl game program is designed for fans to commemorate and celebrate the game, players, teams and the Super Bowl," the league's...
