A little more than 11 months ago, Clelin Ferrell occupied a spot on the same University of Phoenix Stadium turf in the same No. 99 jersey and stood ready to contribute at defensive end for Clemson in the national championship game. That this most certainly would not happen was beside the point. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament as a high school senior and spent his first college season regaining strength and timing, concentrating on reconstruction rather than production. Also, he simply wasn’t needed; if the program was flush anywhere, it was along a feral defensive line anchored by two...

This news organization spent an hour talking to Edwards, 74, about what Kaepernick has done and where the movement needs to go. Here is an edited version of the conversation with the UC Berkeley professor emeritus who lives in Fremont: . . . "When I contacted the Smithsonian (new National Museum of African American History and Culture), I told them they shouldn’t wait another five or six years to get Kap’s shoes, jersey and photo of the Time magazine cover and a photo of him kneeling. They need to do that now. They absolutely agreed."

In every office, every corporate executive suite, and every law firm across this great land, the men who had got pantsed and received numerous swirlies at the hands of jocks in high school finally have their chance at redemption against their brawny tormentors. According to a press release from CBS, “The Big Bang Theory,” the brainy sitcom which references pyramids and autotrophs in its theme song, beat out NBC’s Sunday Night Football as the top-rated, live, primetime same day show. For the past five years Sunday Night Football had owned that coveted, top spot.

Dec 23, 2016Ted Miller Washington and Alabama first played in the 1926 Rose Bowl. AP Photo The rise of Southeastern football in general and Alabama football specifically and all the endless gloating that goes along with it? It's Washington's fault. That isn't just jealous prattle from fans of Oregon or Washington State, likely the two fan bases most annoyed by the Huskies' sudden rise to the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl opposite the vaunted Crimson Tide. No, it's a perfectly reasonable extrapolation from the words of multiple historians and sportswriters. On the surface, No. 4 Washington...

Marv Levy is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his work as head coach of the Bills from 1986 to 1997. And if given the opportunity, he’d be up for trying to get them back to the Super Bowl. Levy told 104.5 The Team in Albany that he thinks he’d be up to the task, even though he’s now 91 years old. “I might do it,” Levy said. “It was one of those things where after forty seven years of coaching I really needed to get that deep breath to step aside but after a couple of years...

When the 49ers announced their team awards Friday afternoon, Kaepernick was the recipient of the Len Eshmont Award, given to the 49er who "best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont, an original member of the 1946 49ers team." The award, which was established after Eshmont died in 1957, is considered the most prestigious honor the players vote on.

Tony Romo will make his 2016 debut on the first day of 2017. Romo, who has missed the entire season after suffering a back injury in the preseason and then being demoted in favor of Dak Prescott, is expected to play on Sunday, January 1, against the Eagles, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. That appears to be a change in plans for the Cowboys, who had previously indicated that they wouldn’t risk an injury to Romo in a meaningless game and would turn to Mark Sanchez if they decided to give Prescott some rest in the regular season finale. The...

Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz bought each of his offensive linemen a personalized Beretta shotgun for Christmas, a twist on the time-honored tradition of a quarterback rewarding the men who keep him upright each week, ESPN reported. “This is an awesome gun. I’m excited about it,” said Allen Barbre, who, like Wentz, is an avid Hunter. “I don’t know if I’ll shoot it, though. It’s pretty nice.” The shotguns are being engraved with each player’s number on the butt of the weapon, which is believed to be a Beretta Silver Pigeon – a $2,000 model. “I like to go clay shooting...

Jim Harbaugh met with the media in Miami Thursday, one day before his Wolverines face the Florida State Seminoles in the Orange Bowl, and his press conference ended on a bizarre note when a reporter earnestly asked him if he planned to take his players to the beach so they could “see some bikinis.”

Before Woody Hayes threw the punch that would end his career, Keith Jackson handed him a pair of boxing gloves. This seemed funny at the time. Jackson, the ABC announcer, did it at a luncheon the day before the Gator Bowl between Hayes’s Ohio State Buckeyes and Clemson. Hayes had a well-earned reputation for losing his temper. There was the time he shoved a cameraman at the Rose Bowl, and the time he destroyed the sideline markers near the end of a loss to Michigan … well, there were a lot of times. His players at Ohio State had seen...

The Kansas City Chiefs have given a gift to all football fans - minus those in Denver - by having defensive lineman Dontari Poe throw a touchdown pass. Poe, who is listed at 346 pounds, lined up in the backfield and received a handoff in the games final moments as the Chiefs were just two yards from the Broncos end zone at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. But rather than powering the ball up the middle in an attempt to drive his way in for the score, Poe gracefully leaped off his feet and floated the ball over the top...

Daron Wyatt. The video shows the other car suspected of taking part in the street racing to be a black Ford Mustang, not red as earlier reported. The Mustang’s driver fled the scene of...

A Swedish woman has skied to the South Pole 10 hours quicker than any other woman has ever done. "What a journey, it feels amazing to be here," Johanna Davidsson tells The Local from the middle of Antarctica. The 33-year-old nurse arrived at the South Pole on skis from Hercules Inlet after 38 days and 23 hours - in other words, ten hours faster than the previous female record holder did it. The journey, which was over 1,000 kilometres, finished on Christmas Eve. "There have really been some ups and downs in this journey, but I was so glad to...

The Minnesota Vikings’ defensive backs defied head coach Mike Zimmer on Saturday, and their decision backfired. Zimmer, a defensive-oriented coach, wanted cornerback Xavier Rhodes to shadow Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson for the whole game. Instead, the Vikings’ defensive backs got together and decided that they could handle Nelson without making a special plan for Rhodes.
