San Diego State University has axed its longtime tradition of naming a homecoming "king" and "queen," and this year will go with the gender-neutral term "royals," the Daily Aztec campus newspaper reports. As recently as last year SDSU named a homecoming "king" and "queen" during its annual football game, according to the university’s website. But this Saturday when the Aztecs take on the University of Wyoming Cowboys, the Royal Court will end up with the "final two Royals," the website adds. It’s unclear if those final two "royals" will be one male and one female, or some other iteration of...

  • Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant goes on profanity-laced tirade toward media

    11/14/2015 6:12:23 AM PST · by ConservativeStatement · 21 replies
Bryant was upset about something ESPN’s Jean-Jacques Taylor wrote in a column and started asking where he was. When Taylor acknowledged Bryant, the two began discussing the story and both men began to yell at each other, according to the Dallas Morning News. When wide receiver Devin Street, who apparently has a locker next to Bryant, gets into the conversation, Taylor reportedly tells Street, “ain’t nobody even talking to you.” The Morning News reports Street and Bryant heard Taylor used the N-word. Bryant began yelling the racial epithet at Taylor and said a reporter shouldn’t say that to a player....

The College Football Czar: Week 11 Week ten in review: The number of unbeaten teams has dwindled to six, as TCU, LSU, Michigan State, Memphis and Toledo were all defeated. There can be no more than four left by the start of the bowl season, because Baylor and Oklahoma State must play each other, and Ohio State and Iowa are on course to meet in the Big Ten title game. The CFP isn’t placing such a high value on that 0 in the L-column, though, and that's a good thing. As great a season as 9-0 Iowa is having, it's...

--SNIP-- Missouri had 63 criminal cases involving 46 athletes during the five-year time period. Twelve athletes were involved in more than one incident, Outside the Lines found, and Missouri had the second-highest number of allegations of sexual assault, violence against women, and harassment. Florida State had the most. In several of the Missouri cases, victims declined prosecution because of the suspect’s status as an athlete and/or because they feared unwanted publicity and harassment from fans.

As we remain passive, Michigan gets aggressive with deer disease When chronic wasting disease was discovered in Wisconsin's wild white-tailed deer herd in 2002, state wildlife officials expressed a goal of eradicating the disease. After several years of effort, including the use of sharpshooters and extended hunting seasons to reduce deer numbers in the affected area, the Department of Natural Resources backed off on its plans and abandoned the aggressive measures. The 2012 Deer Trustees Report helped drive a final stake in the ambitions of any state wildlife managers who hoped to control the disease. The report advised a "more...

As Bernie Sanders prepares to enter the primary-season Octagon against arch-rival Hillary Clinton, he can take some comfort in the fact that the world's most popular MMA fighter, Ronda Rousey, has come out swinging in his corner. In a recent interview with Maxim, the undefeated UFC champion, who defends her bantamweight belt against Holly Holm on Saturday, pledged her support to the progressive Vermont Senator, who is the only "democratic socialist" in Congress. And she's hoping her political muscle serves as an electoral armbar that will send him all the way to the White House. "I'm voting for Bernie Sanders,...

By all accounts—his own, his teams’, and a top NFL-affiliated concussion specialist’s—Wes Welker is healthy and ready to play. St. Louis badly needs a receiver. Still, when the Rams announced they signed Welker to bolster their etiolated passing attack, my first reaction was disappointment. It’s a strange feeling, to hope that Wes Welker—a talented WR and by all accounts a decent guy—never plays football again.

The Indianapolis Colts, already reeling with injury and performing below expectations, received even more terrible injury news on Tuesday: quarterback Andrew Luck suffered abdominal injury in the team's victory over Denver. Luck is expected to miss two to six weeks. Colts head coach Chuck Pagano announced the injury on Tuesday afternoon, saying Luck suffered a lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle on a fourth-quarter scramble. This is in addition to the report from earlier this season that Luck had been playing with multiple fractured ribs. The Colts are in a bye week this week, then face the Falcons,...

ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action news has learned former Altanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson, 29, has died. Multiple sources told Channel 2 Sports Director Zach Klein earlier in the day Monday that Hanson was in a coma after being moved to Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital late Monday morning due to catastrophic organ failure. Hanson was moved to Piedmont so doctors could run a variety of tests to determine why his organs failed. The source said Hanson's problems started early Sunday morning and Hanson was then rushed to a nearby hospital after he started having trouble breathing.
  • Afghanistan's first international marathon: Runners compete under heavy security provided by masked

With heavily-armed guards stationed along the route and livestock blocking the road at times, Afghanistan’s rugged mountains are one of the last places you would expect to see athletes competing in a marathon. For Keith MacIntosh, who has completed more than 20 races, the country’s first international marathon will likely go down as the most memorable and unusual one that he will ever run. Marathons are so rare in this dangerous corner of the world that local villagers were confused and surprised when they encountered foreign runners such as MacIntosh, who was first to cross the finish line.

In the midst of a veritable buffet of key college football games, there's a movement afoot in Missouri that could have long-lasting reverberations across the sport. According to a tweet from the account of Mizzou's Legion of Black Collegians, players of color on the Tigers football team "will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students' experiences." Wolfe and the university has come under heavy criticism of late for responses to race-related events on the campus.

LINCOLN — Finally. It was Nebraska's turn for some late-game heroics. The Huskers stunned undefeated Michigan State and snapped the Spartans' 12-game winning streak Saturday night with an improbable game-winning drive — covering 91 yards in 38 seconds — to earn a 39-38 victory. NU got the ball back without any timeouts trailing by five. And quarterback Tommy Armstrong went to work. He found Jordan Westerkamp for gains of 28 and 33 yards on back-to-back plays.
