Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says he thinks NFL players should stop protesting during the national anthem and instead speak out against domestic violence. The Republican former presidential hopeful sent a letter Monday to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith saying he believes players are showing disrespect for the flag and veterans. Players should drop the “divisive political sideshow” and speak out against domestic violence instead, the governor wrote. NFL league meetings Tuesday offer an opportunity to strongly condemn domestic violence, Walker added. “My request is simple: stand for the American flag and the national anthem...

They’re going to continue to speak out by kneeling down. Five Kennesaw State University cheerleaders who knelt on the football field during the national anthem at a recent game said Tuesday they’ll continue their silent protest in a somewhat different fashion, since a new campus policy prevents them from taking such action on the gridiron. The students said in a group interview Tuesday they’ll continue to get on one knee during the anthem, while they’re in the stadium hallway. “Somebody has to take a stand,” said second-year student Taylor McIver. KSU no longer allows the cheerleaders on the field during...

Declining football game television ratings will cut into Twenty-First Century Fox's earnings, according to one Wall Street firm. Credit Suisse lowered its price target and earnings per share forecasts for the media company, citing Fox's poor Sunday NFL ratings. "We trim our 2018/19 EPS forecasts … ahead of Q1 earnings," analyst Omar Sheikh wrote in a note to clients Thursday. "The key near term headwinds are soft NFL ratings and the risk that the Sky transaction is blocked by UK regulators."

Do you believe in pitiful? Renowned sports broadcaster Al Michaels awkwardly injected Harvey Weinstein’s ongoing sexual assault scandal into NBC’s Giants-Broncos telecast Sunday night, comparing the Hollywood bigwig’s transgressions to the level of turmoil the Giants had experienced this past week. The Giants lost four starting receivers to injury in their loss to the Chargers last week, including season-ending injuries to Odell Beckham Jr., Brandon Marshall and Dwayne Harris. The Giants also suspended Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie indefinitely after a meeting between Rodgers-Cromartie and coach Ben McAdoo. “I mean, let’s face it. The Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey...

The NFL likely hoped for a return to normalcy for Week 6, especially after Commissioner Goodell’s call to “move past the anthem controversy,” and address the issue in detail at league meetings on Tuesday. Instead, what the NFL got was a return to what has become the “new normal” in the age of anthem protests: empty seats.

Colin Kaepernick has filed a grievance under the collective bargaining agreement for collusion against NFL team owners, reports Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report. Kaepernick has hired high-profile attorney Mark Geragos and is preparing to release a statement about his grievance soon, added Freeman. The free-agent quarterback has remained unemployed since his release by the San Francisco 49ers in March and has garnered little interest from teams around the league. This has caused some to suggest he's being blackballed for his national anthem protests during the 2016 season.

OK for the sake of this post, I could give a rat's ass what anyone thinks about the NFL right now. However, never has any of my Viking players ever taken a knee during the national anthem in support of this stupid' "I demand To Be Noticed For My racist belief". So, that being said, I have also nit watched any games nor sports shows about the NFL. The only games I watch are my Viking games. I have the NFL Ticket. I TIVO my game and fast forward all the commercials and even skip the half time. I...

Just logged on to see who was winning the game. I hated to see that Camping World was the main sponsor of the ALCS and the NLCS. The CEO of Camping World is a virulent anti-Trumper. He even said people who voted for Trump need not give him any business...or something like that. See ya, Championship Series. I hope the World Series isn't sponsored by a Trump hater.

The national anthem football controversy continues to have an impact at the high school level. The Des Moines Register reports 13 members of the Ames High School band walked off the field before playing the national anthem on Friday night. This happened before the school hosted Lincoln on the football field. Earlier on Friday, student leaders read a statement to their classmates saying, "the decision to change from a patriotic USA to pink-out theme for the student section was the decision of the Ames High student body alone. Is this political? Maybe. But we are proud of how our students...

Fans booed New Orleans Saints players who knelt before the presentation of the American flag and the singing of the national anthem Sunday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The boos rang down during a moment of silence for fallen NOPD officer Marcus McNeil, who was killed in the line of duty Friday. The fans cheered when the players stood before the anthem, which was performed by former Saintsation Deri Tucker. Sunday's game vs. the Lions was the Saints' first at the Dome since President Trump weighed in on protesting NFL players during a campaign rally in Alabama last month. Officer Marcus...

Mouncey has expressed her desire to become the first elite transgender footballer in the country after starring for the Ainslie Tricolours in the AFL Canberra women's competition this season. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of Sunday’s game during his fourth pass, when Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr hit him shortly after he threw. Rodgers, who completed 2 of 4 passes for 18 yards before exiting, was evaluated in Green Bay’s medical tent and carted off the field. He suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder. The Packers announced Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone shortly after halftime. The Vikings defense rolled without Rodgers. Backup quarterback Brett Hundley threw an interception on his first pass, a tipped ball to cornerback Xavier Rhodes. Hundley was sacked twice and completed 4 of...

Even before Saturday’s huge slate of games had begun to commence, we knew college football Week 7 was offering something unique. It started Friday night when both Syracuse and Cal knocked off Clemson and Washington State, respectively. That’s the No. 2 and No. 7 teams in the nation saying goodbye to their undefeated records. And let’s be honest, nobody saw either of these upsets coming. Saturday was just as crazy. LSU upset Auburn. Boise State upset San Diego State. Arizona State put Washington down in a stunner almost as big as the Syracuse win over Clemson. Michigan, Miami, Oklahoma, USC...

Ah! The scent of chlorine-permeated hair blowing in the wind, the pungent odor of sweaty bodies, and the cloying coconut scent of tanning lotion are part of summer. But now those joyous months are a blur in our rearview mirrors as we launch into fall and all the ways people, athletes, in particular, manage to get grubby. It is October and baseball division playoffs are in full swing. We cheer for our favorite teams, hoping they reach the ultimate baseball pinnacle known as World Series Champions. But, have you noticed all the ways the boys of summer manage to get...

Charlie Culberson tried to score from second on a single by Justin Turner and was initially called out by umpire Mike Winters for not touching home plate after evading Willson Contreras' tag. The Dodgers challenged the call, and after a video review, it was determined that Contreras blocked the plate before he received the ball. The interpretation of the rule infuriated Maddon. The Dodgers challenged on the grounds Contreras broke rule 7.13, which states "unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score. If, in...

Title IX is often credited with getting more girls involved in sports, but there's another, more intimate milestone in the women-in-sports story that deserves some recognition: This year, the Jogbra turns 40. In 1977, Hinda Miller had just started working at the University of Vermont and had taken up jogging. But she found she had a problem: What to do with her breasts? "I used two bras," she says. "You know, everyone has their stories of what they did." Across campus, Lisa Lindahl was in the same predicament. She reached out to a friend — Polly Smith, who made costumes...

Now in the first two weekends of October, the No. 2, 3, 7 and 8 teams have fallen to middle-of-the-pack conference opponents: Last week Oklahoma fell to Iowa State before Michigan lost to Michigan State; on Friday night Clemson suffered a 27–24 loss to Syracuse that sent shockwaves through the college football world, and before anyone could fully process the impact of that result, Washington State laid an egg on the road at Cal, dropping from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 37–3 loss. Let’s take a look at the ripple effect of Friday night’s upsets from three different...
