The presidential palace in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, home to the country’s internationally backed government, has been hit by a massive car bomb, followed by a raid by gunmen, police and witnesses said. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was unharmed. MINNEAPOLIS -- A man has been charged in an assault that left an 18-month-old child with with a brain injury and a severely fractured skull. Officials charged Hussein Osman Birre, 23, with Assault in the First Degree and Domestic Assault after police were called to his home on the 5700 block of Sander Drive on Jan. 25 on a report of a domestic dispute. Authorities say when they arrived, Birre tried to keep officers from entering the home. After forcing their way inside, police say they found Birre's 18-month-old daughter lying on her back, wheezing and barely responsive.

The U.S. military conducted an airstrike in southern Somalia on Sunday against a suspected militant leader, a U.S. military official told CNN. The target was described by the official as a "senior leader" affiliated with al Qaeda and Al-Shabaab, al Qaeda's affiliate in Somalia. Somali pirates on Friday unsuccessfully launched their first attack of 2014 on a tanker in the Gulf of Aden, resulting in the apprehension of five suspected pirates by naval counter-piracy forces a day later. The United States has deployed a small team of military advisers to Somalia for the first time in more than 20 years. Somali Defense Minister Abdihakim Haji Fiqi told VOA the American team has been in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, since October. ...
