Johannesburg, South Africa was treated to a rare dusting of snow this week – the city’s first in more than 10 years. The unexpected winter wonderland was part of a patch of snow that covered various provinces through the weekend into Monday, South Africa’s Times newspaper reported. Photos from around the city show delighted residents gallivanting among the snowflakes, which last coated the area in August 2012. “Eleven years down the line, it’s exciting that we have snow,” local Jennifer Banda said. Others on social media referred to the weather as “pure magic,” The Guardian reported.

Billings-area residents trudged through the slush Monday, but the storm brought some "good" news: The long winter of suffering has not been in vain. Shortly after 10 a.m., the National Weather Service in Billings announced that a scant 0.1 inches of snow had fallen — not enough to accumulate much on the ground or streets, but enough to break the single-season snowfall record. I live south of Missoula, Montana, in the Sapphire & Bitterroot Mountains at 3,500 ft; in the area being discussed, and we haven’t been getting snow like this for several years. Our hunting seasons have been without snow quite regularly and last year we didn’t get ANY snow until the last few days of the season in late November. However the winter snow sticks around here until early August at higher altitude (6,000 ft+). Residents across the Upper Midwest may soon get the snowfall some have been wanting more of this winter. Heavy snow is expected Tuesday in parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
