Eureka! After about a century of research, Swiss scientists have finally cracked the mystery of the holes in Swiss cheese. Despite what you may have been told as a child, they are not caused by mice nibbling away inside cheese wheels. Experts from Agroscope, a state centre for agricultural research, said the phenomenon—which marks famous Swiss cheeses such as Emmental and Appenzell—was caused by tiny bits of hay present in the milk and not bacteria as previously thought. They found that the mystery holes in such cheeses became smaller or disappeared when milk used for cheese-making was extracted using modern...

The establishment of a pro-life centre to assist pregnant women in crisis has resulted in the lives of more than 100 babies being saved in the past two years. That's according to the operators of the Holy Innocents Crisis Centre, which was set up after a heated national debate on abortion in 2009. At that time, pro-lifers - persons opposed to abortion - and pro-choice lobby groups sought to provide convincing arguments for their positions in Parliament. Among the pro-lifers was prominent philanthropist Father Richard Ho Lung, who decided to start the Holy Innocents Crisis Centre at National Heroes Circle...

Yet, in the technical sense of the real definition I am not. So, what am I? I have entered a consecrated life, and I am a woman religious. I am a sister. I’ll explain....

Yesterday, in New York, the sister of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev was arrested for allegedly threatening to blow someone up in what appears to be some kind of weird love triangle situation. You will, of course, remember the Tsarnaevs as the infamous terrorist duo behind the Boston Marathon bombing, which took place back in April of 2013.

A Nova Scotia mainland moose checks out the surroundings. An additional 198 hectares of land is being added to protected holdings in the region connecting New Brunswick to Nova Scotia with the goal of making it easier for the mammals to migrate and find mates. (CONTRIBUTED) AMHERST — The mighty moose. Large, gangly, antlered, awkward-looking twig eater. Amorous and sexy, not so much. But the so-called Moose Sex Project and the land conservancy that makes it possible were at the forefront of a land protection announcement at the YMCA in Amherst on Thursday. “In terms of capturing people’s imaginations...

A walkabout elk wandered into a family house in southern Sweden, but after making itself at home the animal had to be put down due to grisly injuries sustained during the break-in. The elk was spotted walking around in a residential area of Helsingborg on Monday morning. It then proceeded to jump through a window and smash its way into a house, setting of an alarm in the process. Luckily nobody was home, as the family was away on holiday. Police were quickly on the scene and encountered the elk exploring the living room. A hunter was then dispatched as...

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Friday that it will not allow cheese makers use wooden boards to age their cheese - a ruling that would effectively wipe out artisanal cheeses. The FDA's ruling came to light after several cheese makers in New York were cited - despite state laws that allow the use of wood boards."Reports showed that the porous structure of wood made it susceptible to the colonization of bacteria on the surface and inside the wood," Monica Metz, the branch chief for the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's Dairy and Egg Branch, wrote...

Swedish school children fled their woodwork class on Monday when an elk broke in through a window and reacted violently when it found it couldn't get out. Monday afternoon was no ordinary school day for students at Sörgårdsskolan, in Mölndal, western Sweden. Shortly after lunch, an elk calf entered though one of the classroom windows. The junior high school pupils beat a hasty retreat. "The elk felt cloistered in there in the confined space," regional police spokesman Thomas Fuxborg told The Local. "So when the children had locked themselves into the adjoining paint supply room, they could hear the elk...

Sgt. Bernie Mettler has responded to a lot of calls in his 21 years as a St. Louis County sheriff's deputy, but until this week, never a moose rescue. Mettler was called to the north side of Aurora on Monday morning after reports from residents that a moose was on the loose and apparently unable to find its way back into the woods. "It looked like it came into the north side of town from the east ... and then got trapped,'' Mettler said. "There's a tall fence there that keeps people out of the old mine dumps and mine...

ORILLIA, Ont. -- Local students were ordered to stay in their classrooms Thursday while emergency crews dealt with a 600-pound threat -- a female moose, estimated to be about two years old, which had made her way onto a property near Monsignor Lee Catholic School and Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary Schools. "How Canadian is that?" Tyler Evans said upon learning a moose was behind the safety precaution. "In the States they're getting locked down because of bomb threats, and we're getting locked down because of a moose," the Patrick Fogarty student said. The schools were put in hold-and-secure mode, meaning...

Serious flaws have marred the province’s strategy to reduce moose-vehicle collisions, says wildlife expert Tony Clevenger. According to Clevenger, Newfoundland’s moose control policy between 2003 and 2011 was based on flawed science. And the collision mitigation methods in place at that time — public awareness campaigns, signs and brush cutting — were ineffective and poorly managed. Clevenger, a Montana State University research scientist based in Alberta, testified Tuesday in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador as part of the ongoing class-action lawsuit involving moose-vehicle collisions. “I can see no explanation why the Newfoundland Department of Transportation and Works has...
