The establishment of a pro-life centre to assist pregnant women in crisis has resulted in the lives of more than 100 babies being saved in the past two years.
That's according to the operators of the Holy Innocents Crisis Centre, which was set up after a heated national debate on abortion in 2009.
At that time, pro-lifers - persons opposed to abortion - and pro-choice lobby groups sought to provide convincing arguments for their positions in Parliament.
Among the pro-lifers was prominent philanthropist Father Richard Ho Lung, who decided to start the Holy Innocents Crisis Centre at National Heroes Circle in the Corporate Area after he was challenged on what he could do for mothers who had no means to take care of a child.
Mothers return for babies
Sister Jo-Ann Belmonte, who manages the centre, last week told The Sunday Gleaner that having been persuaded not to have an abortion, the vast majority of the women who opted to leave the babies at the centre and move on with their lives have returned for their children.
"They had left them behind for a short while, but then they came to get them back, and one of our children that was left behind for more than a year and a half, the baby's father came and took him," said Belmonte. In the case where the father came for the child he was granted custody by the court.

if it were just that simple. evidence shows otherwise.
there ain’t enough oxytocin to ever get me over dirty diapers and the terrible twos. much less the tweens.
Does that statement mean you never wanted or had children?
No hidden/subtle messages.
Then it is a good thing you didn’t have children - good for the children I mean.
It’s okay you missed the point. Obviously I hit a personal nerve on you. Happy New Year to you.
Perhaps it was when I asked you a direct question you still responded without answering. I thought it was a bit rude, so I responded in kind. Happy New Year to you as well
I did respond, you just didn’t care for the response.
Since you’re a girl, and assumed the worst about me from my post, I’ll tell you what you missed.
The point was being made that there is more to loving children than a mere body chemical. If it was just because of a chemical the body makes, we’d have a lot less abandoned/aborted/abused kids in this world. Love is not a mere dose of oxycotin during birth.
Actually I originally thought you were joking - many here have a good sense of humor so I didn’t know if you possibly had a large family and friends of yours knew that, so your comment was meant to be sarcastically funny. On the other hand I didn’t want to assume that if you didn’t have children and had wished for them - or in your case possibly never wanted them. You assumed I was starting out to be mean and accusing when I merely asked if you didn’t want them. I never intended to attack - to have children is a choice I wish more considered before doing - I actually didn’t understand your response, it was too vague
It’s my experience here that when I get a question like yours, the way it’s worded, the people asking have presupposed a response based on incorrect assumptions.
One of the problems on FR - really, any posting place where you only see words - is that more than half the communication cues one normally gets from face to face talking - body language and tone - aren’t there. We fill in stuff and on a site like this, most people assume the worst in others and that influencecs their replies.
So true - so we’re good?
Wait - I apologize for my snarky comment first..... now are we good?
Yeah, we’re good. :)
I paid for two square feet of that center, iirc. Richard Ho Lung is not just a “prominent philanthropist”: he was the founder and until recently the Superior General of the Missionaries of the Poor, a growing international religious order.
Awww, that was a great ending you two. I’ve rarely seen a running spat end so well and graciously. Usually they are followed down the line by an increase of “removed by moderator” posts, lol.
Happy New Year! :)
