MISSOULA— The Missoula police officer who was shot in the chest and leg Wednesday night was saved by his bulletproof vest and the keys to his handcuffs. Mark Muir said Thursday. "His vest absolutely saved his life," Muir said. The second bullet struck Stevenson in the leg, breaking but not shattering the bone. Stevenson is being treated at St. Patrick Hospital and is recovering well, Missoula County Sheriff's Capt. Susan...

When the high-speed pursuit finally came to an end Friday afternoon and the fugitive couple had nowhere left to run, they looked at the police closing in and contemplated fighting to the death. "At the very end, I wanted to fight it out," Jones said Tuesday from the Clark County Detention Center. "I still had the gun. I still had my finger on the trigger. I was...

The U.S. may initiate incursions into Syrian territory to stop Baathist insurgents from crossing the border and attacking U.S. troops in Iraq, a senior administration official said. "I think the sanctions are one thing. But I think the other thing [the Syrians] have got to start worrying about is whether we would take cross-border military action in hot pursuit," the official told the Jerusalem Post. "In other words, nothing like full-scale military hostilities. But when you're being attacked from safe havens across the border – we've been through this a lot of times before – we're just not going to...

By Tamara Lytle | Washington Bureau Chief Posted October 5, 2004 CLEVELAND -- With the race for the White House drawing significantly closer in national polls, tonight's vice-presidential debate between Republican Dick Cheney and Democrat John Edwards could take a harsh turn. Because both men seek the No. 2 role in the White House, neither must act especially presidential. And that, experts say, could mean the debate equivalent of a bare-knuckled brawl. . SNIP... Sorry for the vanity but if anyone has been watching the FX cable channel you may have seen the cheap shot which Hollywierd couln't resist taking at gun ownership. The special was a re-encactment of the North Hollywood shoot out a few years ago. It was a fine moment for our couraeguos LAPD, but the producers turned the show into an anti-gun propaganda piece. In particular was the moment when LAPD went to B & B Gun Sales in the valley to pick up rifles for use against the bank robbers. This actually happened. I have been to the B &...

MEXICO CITY -- A wild shootout between drug traffickers and Mexican soldiers near the Texas border Friday ended with the arrest of Osiel Cardenas Guillen, reputed chief of the Gulf Cartel and one of the fugitives most wanted by the United States. Mexican officials confirmed the arrest Friday after word spread in Matamoros, across the Texas border from Brownsville, of another successful strike by the same army special forces units that last year arrested alleged kingpin Benjamin Arellano Felix. In previous raids, the military strike forces had met little resistance. On Friday, however, three soldiers were injured when they confronted...

NAPLES, Idaho - Just the crude foundation remains. The sun-bleached plywood floor outlines the mountain cabin that long ago collapsed under the strain of North Idaho winters. Gone is the door through which FBI sharpshooter Lon Horiuchi fatally shot Vicki Weaver and injured family friend Kevin Harris. Gone is the shed where 14-year-old Sammy Weaver was laid to rest after being shot in the back by a U.S. marshal. Gone, too, are the signs of the foot-chase-turned-shootout between Sammy, Harris and federal agents that left Deputy U.S. Marshal William Degan dead. No monument rests on this rocky outcropping of Ruby...

Hizbullah and Amal southern representatives agreed Friday to intensify cooperation and coordination a day after a gun battle erupted between the two parties.
