The U.S. Navy is denying reports that it will file charges against a naval officer who used a weapon to return fire against Chattanooga gunman Muhammad Abdulazeez during last month's deadly attack.

Minneapolis is in the midst of a summertime spike in shootings. There were 26 shootings in the two-week period ending on July 13, the highest total since at least 2011. The majority the shootings have taken place in north Minneapolis, but there have also been two in south Minneapolis, and five in downtown. Barb Johnson, the city council president, called the spike in shootings "disgusting," while Mayor Betsy Hodges is calling the trend "unacceptable." "If there are flowers on the block, you can go there," the 38-year-old said. "If there's been police tape or gunshots, you avoid it." Baltimore police are investigating 17 shootings that have occurred since early Monday.. Six men were reported shot Tuesday after 11 shootings were reported Monday, according to police. According to a 2013 Pew Research study, 37 percent of households had an adult who owned a gun — 24 percent said they owned a gun, and 13 percent said someone else in their household did. There are about 319 million people in the United States, so that means there are about 118 milion gun owners in this nation. Mother Jones reports there have been 69 mass shootings in the last 30 years. The Washington Post says, a Congressional Research Service report published in 2013 counted 78 incidents over roughly the same period, in which 547 were killed.
