The Dallas Morning News The Scoop Blog ^ | April 2, 2016 | Sarah Mervosh
Racial tensions in South Dallas almost exploded at an anti-mosque protest Saturday afternoon before quickly dissolving when the protesters retreated. A few hundred South Dallas residents, mostly black, flooded Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to oppose a planned demonstration by a mostly white group that routinely protests outside mosques. Both sides were armed. Dallas police stood guard on a funeral home’s roof as black counterprotesters swarmed the parking lot of Eva’s House of Bar-B-Q, vowing to defend their streets and chanting “black power.” A police officer uses a binoculars across the Muhammad Mosque in Dallas, Saturday, April 2, 2016. We all know CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN or Fox wasn't going to do it. "Imam’s Terrorist Ties Exposed by Local News Station," from Judicial Watch, November 26 (thanks to Pamela Geller): While the Obama Justice Department tours the nation condemning unfounded discrimination against Muslims at their place of worship, a local Florida news station uncovers an imam’s ties to a blind sheik behind the first World Trade Center bombing in the early 90s. Not surprisingly, the administration’s campaign to combat mosque intolerance is being heavily promoted while the shocking imam terrorist story gets swept under the rug. We only know...

Although NBC and CBS on Friday covered the “unprecedented,” “deep frustration” that diplomats at the State Department have for Barack Obama’s Syria policy, ABC’s Good Morning America allowed a scant 18 seconds to the move against Obama. This is despite allowing 14 minutes to a Demi Lovato rock concert, clearly not as important a topic.  Here is the total of GMA’s coverage on Friday from news anchor Amy Robach: “President Obama's policies in the Middle East coming under fire. This time from diplomats at the State Department. More than 50 diplomats have signed a memo urging the President to launch...

But the man called out by Trump -- Gregory Cheadle, a Republican candidate in California's first congressional district -- didn't seem to mind the attention. "I never, ever sensed any racism on his part," Cheadle told CBS News in a phone interview Saturday. "Looking at it now, I can see on a script -- in a transcript, or even somebody watching the clip -- I can see how they would jump to the conclusion that it was racist. But I never felt anything at all."
  • Could Trump have Christie decide if Clinton is indicted?

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump says if he's elected president, he'd have the top law enforcement official in his administration look into indicting Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton over her email use. So does that mean New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie could be the one to make the decision? During an interview that aired Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," host John Dickerson noted that Trump has repeatedly said on the campaign trail that Clinton should face jail time over her emails. And if she isn't indicted before then, Dickerson asked, would Trump have his U.S. attorney general prosecute her?

Donald Trump has said he doesn't believe in man-made climate change and has called global warming a "hoax," but he's trying to protect a golf course he owns on the coast of Ireland from its effects. The presumptive GOP nominee applied for a permit to build a seawall next to Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Ireland in County Clare to prevent erosion, according to Politico. His application included an environmental impact statement that explicitly mentions "global warming and its effects." According to Politico's report, that statement says that rising sea levels in that region could accelerate erosion. The statement...

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said in an interview airing Sunday that GOP front-runner Donald Trump may encourage riots if he does not win the Republican nomination in Cleveland this summer. Asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" if he was concerned about the possibility of violence if he were able to "overthrow" Trump with the delegates in Cleveland, Cruz insisted there wouldn't but said that Trump might try to fan the flames. "No, it won't, although Donald may do everything he can to encourage riots," he said. "You know, overthrow is such a loaded spin word as ... to bring nothing...

After the network spent days attacking both North Carolina and Mississippi for passing religious freedom laws it labeled “discriminatory,” on Thursday, CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King touted “a major corporate backlash” against Mississippi as “executives from GE, Pepsi, Levi Strauss, and other companies sent a letter yesterday to the Governor Phil Bryant condemning the new law...” In the report that followed, correspondent Mark Strassman promoted one small business owner blasting the measure: “In Jackson, Mississippi, Mitchell Moore owns Campbell's bakery. This Republican says the state's religious freedom law is bad for business.” Moore worried: “...we now have a target...

Consistent with its sole reason for existence, which is paving the way for the eventual ascension of Hillary Clinton to the Oval Office, Madam Secretary took occasion to remind us on Sunday night, in an episode titled 'Left of the Boom', that Madam Hillary is the one person in Washington who understands why 9/11 happened, and maybe, no definitely, would have been the only person who could have prevented it. Specifically, the CIA tries to stop Madam Hillary from taking the lead into the investigation of stolen uranium in Moldova:

Beloved detective Nancy Drew is returning to TV - but she'll look different from how fans remember. American network CBS is pledging that the new Nancy Drew won't be white. At the Television Critics Association press previews last week, the head of the CBS entertainment division, Glenn Geller, told reporters his network wanted to focus on diversity, including shows designed around characters who were black and Latino. "We're not casting colour-blind, we're casting colour-conscious," he said.

On Thursday evening, Edward Archer approached Philadelphia police officer Jesse Hartnett and proceeded to shoot at him 13 times. Friday morning, he professed to have done so in the name of Islam, and it's reported that he has pledged his allegiance to ISIS. This violent attempt to murder a law-enforcement officer is in keeping with ISIS's ongoing effort to attack those whose job it is to keep America safe, as we have seen in Fort Hood, Boston, and Chattanooga. Yet in the wake of another attack in the name of radical Islamic terrorism, it is unfortunate that we have already...

We live in a weary age of fable. The latest Hollywood mythology is entitled "Truth." But the film is actually a fictionalized story about how CBS News super-anchor Dan Rather and his "60 Minutes" producer supposedly were railroaded by corporate and right-wing interests into resigning. In reality, an internal investigation by CBS found that Rather and his "60 Minutes" team -- just weeks before the 2004 election -- had failed to properly vet documents of dubious authenticity asserting that a young George W. Bush had shirked his duty as a Texas Air National Guard pilot. The fabulist movie comes on...
  • Map: Two countries get 75% of all U.S. spending on foreign military aid

The United States spent a total of $5.9 billion to fund militaries around the world in 2014, according to the government’s 2015 Foreign Assistance report. Of that total, some 75%, or about $4.4 billion, was divided between Israel and Egypt. Clearly, the Middle East, at 64% of the pie, is the theme here, with Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon also found among the top 10 recipients. Closer to home, Colombia led the Americas with a relatively scant $29 million. Still, that’s enough to place it ninth overall on the list.
